ing vantage points that bring out the differences between two or more aspects of an interactive system also highlights the asymmetry in their reciprocal effect. Granted such reciprocal effect, production was said to play the dominant role on all five levels of generality on which Marx operates. But it is only by abstracting production as a vantage point that its special influence on other econo...
Computational dialectics are a powerful way to structure the communicative acts that are expressed during the process of argumentation. Many such systems have been proposed but there has been no consensus over what constitutes a good system, or on what basis such a consensus could be built. This paper introduces a testbed for computational dialectics that enables disparate systems to be easily ...
Peter Henrici coined the term “algorithmic mathematics” and “dialectic mathematics” in a 1973 talk. I will borrow these two terms and attempt to synthesize the two aspects from a pedagogical viewpoint with illustrative examples gleaned from mathematical developments in Eastern and Western cultures throughout history. Some examples from my teaching experience in the classroom will also be given.
other approaches. The first of these is `material thinking' (das materielles Denken): `a contingent consciousness that is absorbed only in material stuff', a form of thought which is rooted in existing conditions and cannot see beyond them. In this analysis the ‘purpose’ of gesture is to fuel and propel thought and speech. A case study illustrates the dependence of verbal thought on context and how it functions. Problems for computational modeling, the presence and absence of gesture ‘...
Studies on epistemically suspect beliefs (ESB) have suggested that individual’s analytic cognition suppresses unwarranted beliefs, however, our previous studies also showed that an inhibitory effect of analytic cognition was higher among Westerners than Easterners. Rather, intuitive cognition was a common predictor of beliefs between two cultures. Among several cultural differences in cognitive...
The argumentative system, known to the decision-making, communications, knowledge creation, problem solving, and research methods literature, can be generalised to assist IS design. It has a deep philosophical basis, confronts the issue of uneven power relationships in stakeholders, does not assume objective knowledge, and encourages a learn-by-doing modular approach allowing rolling reflection...
