The rate of thrombolysis markedly decreases after a thrombosed vessel is partly recanalized and the remaining clot poses serious risk for rethrombosis. We studied in vitro how thrombolysis depends on penetration of plasma containing thrombolytic agents - 0.2 micro g/ml rt-PA or 250 IU/ml streptokinase (SK) - and the magnetic resonance contrast agent Gd-DTPA (at 1 mmol/l) into non-occlusive clot...

Plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) is the major specific inhibitor of tissue-type plasminogen activator (tPA) which mediates fibrin clot lysis through activation of plasminogen. Wild-type-PAI-1 (wPAI-1) is rapidly converted to the latent form (half-life of approximately 2 h) and loses its ability to inhibit tPA. We developed a very long half-life PAI-1 (VLHL PAI-1), a recombinant protein...

The principles relating the lysis times of fibrin clots to their contents of fibrin, plasminogen and plasminogen-activator were investigated. Mathematical considerations suggested that the square of the lysis time should correlate linearly with the fibrin content, and inversely with the activator and the plasminogen contents of the system. Experimental studies, during which these parameters wer...

The role of the fibrinolytic system in the development of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is unclear. We determined the plasma fibrinolytic potential of patients enrolled in the Leiden Thrombophilia Study (LETS), a population-based casecontrol study on risk factors for DVT. Plasma fibrinolytic potential was determined in 421 patients and 469 control subjects by means of a tissue factor– induced and ...

Introduction: Endocrine disorders affect both the coagulation and fibrinolytic systems, and have been associated with the development of cardiovascular diseases. Thrombin-activatable fibrinolysis inhibitor (TAFI) is a link between the coagulation and fibrinolytic system. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism on TAFI levels and function. Methods:...

Clot lysis methods are used extensively in fibrinolytic work both for research into the physiology of the fibrinolytic system and for assay and standardization of enzymes. The following is a description of a simple method for measuring partial clot lysis using cheap and easily available apparatus and reagents. The method was first described by Blix in 1962 and has been adapted to suit the appar...

BACKGROUND The increasingly high incidence of ischemic stroke caused by thrombosis of the arterial vessels is one of the major factors that threaten people's health and lives in the world. The present treatments for thrombosis are still unsatisfactory. Herbal preparations have been used since ancient times for the treatment of several diseases. The aim of this study was to investigate whether h...

The aim of the study was to investigate the thrombolytic activity of Punica granatum and Azadirachta indica over canine, bovine, caprine and avian blood clot using streptokinase and water as positive and negative control respectively. Using an in vitro thrombolytic model, the clot lysis activity of A. indica was observed as 48.06±0.59%, 50.01±1%, 47.6±0.69% and 28.03±0.35% and of P. granatum as...

In this present study, the bark extracts of Erythrina variegate were subjected to evaluate of the thrombolytic activity, which was assessed by using human erythrocyte and the results were compared with standard streptokinase (SK). The methanol extract showed 72.14 ± 3.77 % clot lysis as compared to 78.42 ± 1.6 % clot lysis produced by standard streptokinase.
