A new reagent for the chromogenic Limulus amebocyte lysate (LAL) assay is described. LAL was formulated for optimal performance in either an endpoint procedure or a kinetic procedure with the chromogenic substrate, buffer, and LAL components colyophilized as a single reagent. The kinetic chromogenic method required an incubating microplate reader coupled to a computer for collection and analysi...

Microbial analyses of fermented milk products require selective methods to discriminate between close species simultaneously present in high amounts. A culture-based method combining novel chromogenic agar media and appropriate incubation conditions was developed to enumerate lactic acid bacteria (LAB) strains in fermented milk. M1 agar, containing two chromogenic substrates, allowed selective ...

A coupled chromogenic reaction (based on an agar overlay combining NADH, pyruvate kinase, lactate dehydrogenase, phosphoenolpyruvate, ATP, and kanamycin sulfate with thiazolyl blue-phenazine methosulfate for detection of NADH consumption) was optimized for the detection of aminoglycoside phosphotransferases (APHs). When used after analytical isoelectrofocusing of bacterial extracts from APH-pro...

OBJECTIVE To investigate if introital and vaginal flushing samples inoculated on chromogenic agar could increase the recovery rate and rapid identification of Candida and non-albicans species, as compared to culture of posterior vaginal fornix samples on Sabouraud agar and speciation of isolates by biochemical tests. METHODS Samples from the introitus and the posterior vaginal fornix and vagi...

BACKGROUND Screening at hospital admission for carriage of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) has been proposed as a strategy to reduce nosocomial infections. The objective of this study was to determine the long-term costs and health benefits of selective and universal screening for MRSA at hospital admission, using both PCR-based and chromogenic media-based tests in various se...

This study was performed to investigate the use of chromogenic tube and methyl blue-Sabouraud agar for the presumptive identification of Candida albicans. 124 clinical isolates, including 111 C.albicans and 13 Candida spp strains, which had been identified by morphology on cornmeal tween 80 agar and Vitek automated identification system, were included. Three different identification procedures,...

We evaluated which chromogenic agar medium for Salmonella detection in stool would be most sensitive and specific in our culture protocol. The use of BBL CHROMagar Salmonella chromogenic medium combined with xylose-lysine-deoxycholate agar yielded a sensitivity of 100% and also reduced workload and costs.
