Growth of the four methanogens investigated was inhibited by chloramphenicol-3-acetate; therefore, introduction of chloramphenicol acetyltransferase-encoding genes should not confer chloramphenicol resistance on these methanogens. Reduction of the aryl nitro group of chloramphenicol produced a compound which did not inhibit the growth of these methanogens.

antibiotic resistance pattern of salmonella and e. coli isolated from chickens against several antibiotics was determined. a total of 150 samples from chickens were isolated and identified using various enrichment and special media. disc diffusion antibiotic susceptibility test was performed and mic and mbc of doxycycline were also determined using serial dilution method. sixty nine bacterial i...

The occurrence of a chloramphenicol-acetylating enzyme, similar to that found in Escherichia coli, carrying an R factor was investigated in various gram-negative bacilli. The acetylated products of chloramphenicol were identified by chromatography and quantitatively assayed after benzene extraction. The investigated strains were of the Salmonella-Arizona group, the Klebsiella-Aerobacter group, ...

Chloramphenicol is an old antibiotic that also inhibits mammalian mitochondrial protein synthesis. Our studies demonstrated that chloramphenicol is highly cytotoxic to myeloma cells, acting in a dose- and time-dependent manner. Chloramphenicol sharply suppressed ATP levels in myeloma cells at concentrations ≥ 25 μg/mL. Colorimetric and clonogenic assays indicate that chloramphenicol inhibits gr...

Chloramphenicol and florfenicol are broad-spectrum antibiotics. Although the bacterial resistance mechanisms to these antibiotics have been well documented, hydrolysis of these antibiotics has not been reported in detail. This study reports the hydrolysis of these two antibiotics by a specific hydrolase that is encoded by a gene identified from a soil metagenome. Hydrolysis of chloramphenicol h...

Derivatives of Myxococcus xanthus FB(t) resistant to chloramphenicol (25 mug/ml) arose spontaneously with a frequency of approximately 10(-7). One of these organisms (FB(t)Cam(1) (r)) was characterized. FB(t)Cam(1) (r) showed a unique type of phenotypic instability. After transfer from medium containing chloramphenicol to medium lacking the drug, resistance was lost after approximately one gene...
