The mode of anaesthesia used during pneumoencephalography has a significant effect on the size of the cerebral ventricles 24 hours after the procedure. Post-encephalographic ventricular enlargement is less marked in patients examined under nitrous oxide anaesthesia. This appears to be related to passage of the gas into the ventricles during the encephalogram, and subsequent diffusion outwards. ...

Morphometric cerebral characteristics were studied in children with prenatal poly-substance exposure (n=14) compared to controls (n=14) without such exposure. Ten of the substance-exposed children were born to mothers who used opiates (heroin) throughout the pregnancy. Groups were compared across 16 brain measures: cortical gray matter, cerebral white matter, hippocampus, amygdala, thalamus, ac...

An exhaustive analysis of the morphology and morphometry of the encephalic ventricles has been carried out using an array of diagnostic imaging techniques; namely, ultrasound, computerised tomography, magnetic resonance and its three-dimensional variant. The study was conducted on a total of 822 patients ranging in age from birth to 89 years old. The incorporation of these techniques into the f...

In dogs anesthetized with intravenous chloralose, vasopressin was injected either intravenously or into the cerebral ventricles, and the cardiovascular effects were studied before and after stabilizing the arterial blood pressure, bilateral vagotomy, and transection of the cervical cord at the level of C2. Intravenous vasopressin caused a rise in arterial blood pressure and pronounced bradycard...

in this review the role of cerebrospinal fluid (csf) in mammalian cerebral cortex development has been highlighted. many studies have focused on the potential role of the csf in the developmental process. in particular, the cerebral cortex develops from the germinal epithelium adjacent to the csf. csf contains proteins, growth factors and other neurotrophic factors which are important for neura...

The premature infant brain has been thoroughly studied by sonography, and normal standards for ventricular size have been established. Whether these apply to normal full-term infants is uncertain. Fifty-three healthy full-term infants were electively examined by real-time sonography through the anterior fontanelle on the first to sixth days of life. Nine had asymmetric lateral ventricles; two o...
