This paper shows that three classic properties for bargaining solutions in an environment with a variable number of agents – Anonymity, Individual Monotonicity and Consistency – characterize a one-parameter class of Truncated Leximin solutions. Given a positive and possibly infinite α, a Truncated Leximin solution gives each agent the minimum of α and their Leximin solution payoff. JEL-Classifi...
We prove existence of equilibria in bipartite social games, where players choose both a strategy in a game and a partner with whom to play the game. Such social games generalize the well-known marriage problem where players choose partners, but there are no endogenous choices subsequent to a matching. In the context of priority-based allocation objects, we formulate methods to compare assignments in terms their stability. We introduce three basic properties that a reasonable stability comparison should satisfy. show for any satisfying properties, top trading cycles mechanism is minimally unstable among efficient and strategy-proof mechanisms when objects have unit capacities. Our unifying ap...
We measure friction in the matching of students and law schools as the number of unnecessary student applications and school admissions that have to be undertaken per actual matriculation. We show that friction increases with student and school attractiveness, but decreases for top schools and students. We discuss connections with the literature on frictional matching. JEL: D02, C78.
The 5' region of potato virus X (PVX) RNA contains a stem-loop structure, stem-loop 1 (SL1), that is required for efficient plus-strand RNA accumulation. To determine how changes to individual elements in SL1 are accommodated by the virus, we inoculated PVX transcripts containing modifications in the terminal tetraloop (TL), stem C (SC), and stem D (SD) regions onto Nicotiana benthamiana plants...
This chapter gives a flavour of recent theoretical work on coalition formation and political parties. I survey recent work on both pre-election coalition formation and post election coalition (or government) formation. A number of alternative rationales for the formation of parties are compared with the help of some illustrative examples. JEL Classification:C71, C72, C78, D71, D72, D78
In the context of resource allocation on the basis of responsive priorities, Ergin (2002) identifies a necessary and sufficient condition for the deferred acceptance rule to satisfy a consistency principle. In this note we extend this result to the domain of substitutable priorities, complementing results of Kojima and Manea (2010) and Kumano (2009). JEL classification: D63, C78.
We show that a bargaining game of alternating offers with exogenous risk of breakdown and played by dynamically consistent non-expected utility maximizers is formally equivalent to Rubinstein’s (1982) game with time preference. Within this game, the behavior of dynamically consistent players is indistinguishable from the behavior of expected utility maximizers. Journal of Economic Literature Cl...
Several studies indicate that humans are overconfident about their own (relative) abilities. We propose a notion of pragmatic beliefs, and show through an example that this concept can shed light on why overconfidence emerges. Through the example, we also shed light on the idea that that ’bounded rationality’ may arise endogenously in a game without assuming complexity costs. JEL codes: B41, C7...
