The behavior and performance of the Russian wheat aphid, Diuraphis no&r (Mordvilko), on fungal endophyte-infected and endophyte-free perennial ryegrass, Lolium perenne L., was investigated in the laboratory and field. Aphids did not select endophytefree over endophyte-infected leaf sheaths and stem segments in petri dish preference tests. Similarly, the probing behavior of D. noxia on endophyte...

Bacillus mycoides GM6LP is an endophyte isolated from plant tissues of Lolium perenne L. Here, we report its draft genome sequence (6.2 Mb), which contains 96 contigs and 6,129 protein-coding genes. Knowledge about its genome will enable us to evaluate the potential use of GM6LP as a plant growth-promoting bacterium.

The development of preparation techniques that include freeze fracturing provide an ideal method for studying the differentiation of plant tissues in the scanning electron microscope. This is illustrated with reference to tapetal development in Catananche caerulea, which has a plasmodial tapetum, and in Lolium perenne, which has a secretory tapetum.

Treatment of log yard runoff is required to avoid contamination of receiving watercourses. The research aim was to assess if infiltration of log yard runoff through planted soil systems is successful and if different plant species affect the treatment performance at a field-scale experimental site in Sweden (2005 to 2007). Contaminated runoff from the log yard of a sawmill was infiltrated throu...

Rust diseases cause significant damage in forage and seed crops of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne), which is highly heterozygous and heterogeneous and thus presents difficulty in genetic analysis. There has been no definitive demonstration of the existence of pathotypes for stem rust or other rusts of perennial ryegrass, although experiments with crown rust (Puccinia coronata) of this host ...

In both Sordaria macrospora and Neurospora crassa, components of the conserved STRIPAK (striatin-interacting phosphatase and kinase) complex regulate cell-cell fusion, hyphal network development and fruiting body formation. Interestingly, a number of Epichloë festucae genes that are required for hyphal cell-cell fusion, such as noxA, noxR, proA, mpkA and mkkA, are also required for the establis...

A deaminase specific for 4-aminopyrimidine nucleosides has been found in rye grass. Lolium perenne. The pH optimum, temperature stability, Km values and specificity was determined.A new and more accurate method for following the course of deamination is reported. This method depends on the shift in maximum absorbance wavelength of the mixture containing the 4-aminopyrimidine nucleoside and its ...
