Norepinephrine and the enzymes involved in its synthesis and degradation were found to be associated with isolated brain microvessels. The significance of these results are discussed with respect to adrenergic innervation of the cerebral microvessels and thereby neural regulation of the cerebral microcirculation.

Recent advances in cell biology open the way for studying aspects of blood-brain bamer (BBB) formation and function that have puzzled investigators since Ehrlich and Goldmann first described the barrier. Although the endothelial cells in the microvessels of all tissues appear to arise from common mesodermal precursors, considerable organ-to-organ variability exists in their ultrastructure and p...

In vivo antinociception studies demonstrate that deltorphins are opioid peptides with an unusually high blood-brain barrier penetration rate. In vitro, isolated bovine brain microvessels can take up deltorphins through a saturable nonconcentrative permeation system, which is apparently distinct from previously described systems involved in the transport of neutral amino acids or of enkephalins....

The hippocampus is one of the earliest and most affected regions in Alzheimer's disease (AD), followed by the cortex while the cerebellum is largely spared. Importantly, endothelial dysfunction is a common feature of cerebral blood vessels in AD. In this study, we sought to determine if regional heterogeneity of cerebral microvessels might help explain the susceptibility of the hippocampus and ...

Brain capillary endothelial cells play an important role in ion homeostasis of the brain through the transendothelial transport of Na and K. Since little is known about the regulation of ion transport in these cells, we determined the effect of extracellular potassium concentration ([K]o) on the kinetics of the Na,K-pump in isolated cerebral microvessels using both K uptake and Na efflux as mea...

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Stroke is one of the most common causes of mortality and morbidity in the Western world. It results from the occlusion of a cerebral artery followed by severe disturbances in blood supply through microvessels to brain tissue. Despite an extensive literature its pathophysiology is poorly understood, and this has severely impeded the logical development of therapy. METHOD...

Mouse brain microvessel endothelial cells convert eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) to prostaglandin (PG) E3, PGI3, and several hydroxy fatty acid derivatives. Similar types of products are formed by these microvessel endothelial cells from arachidonic acid. The formation of PGI2 and PGE2 is reduced, however, when the brain microvessel endothelial cultures are incubated initially with EPA. Exposure t...
