In addition to intrinsic resistance in Acinetobacter baumannii, many different types of acquired resistance mechanisms have been reported, including the presence of VIM and IMP metallo β-lactamases and also of blaOXA-23-like and blaOXA-58-like enzymes. In the Kurdistan region of Iraq, the multiresistant A. baumannii-calcoaceticus complex is prevalent. We characterized the different mechanisms o...

A novel beta-lactamase gene, blaOXA-61, from Campylobacter jejuni GC015 was cloned and its nucleotide sequence determined. blaOXA-61 encodes a protein of 257 amino acids in which the active-site STFK tetrad and conserved class D beta-lactamase motifs YGN and KTG were identified. A conserved sequence upstream of blaOXA-61 is required for expression in Campylobacter.

BACKGROUND Carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii has emerged as an important cause of infection in burn patients. This study aimed to characterize the antimicrobial susceptibility pattern, determine the prevalence of oxacillinase and metallo-beta-lactamase (MBL) genes, and type the A. baumannii isolates obtained from burn patients. METHODS During a 1-year period, a total of 40 nondupli...

BACKGROUND Acinetobacter baumannii is a significant hospital pathogen, possessing a considerable degree of antimicrobial resistance. A. baumannii resistance to carbapenems and aminoglycosides is mostly conferred by class D OXA carbapenemases and aminoglycoside-modifying enzymes, respectively. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of selected genes encoding OXA carbapenemases and...

To the Editor Carbapenems (i.e. ertapenem, imipenem, meropenem, and doripenem) are second line antimicrobials reserved to treat serious infections, including those caused by Gramnegative bacilli (GNB) producing extended-spectrum b-lactamses (ESBLs). ESBLs mediate resistance among GNB to b-lactam drugs, including third generation cephalosporins. Emergence of carbapenemases-producing GNB (mainly ...

Rapid molecular identification of carbapenemase genes in Gram-negative bacteria is crucial for infection control and prevention, surveillance and for epidemiological purposes. Furthermore, it may have a significant impact upon determining the appropriate initial treatment and greatly benefit for critically ill patients. A novel oligonucleotide microarray-based assay was developed to simultaneou...

Background: The emergence of multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii complicates the therapy of the related infections. Hospital isolates of A. baumannii are usually multidrug-resistant. The problem is compounded by increasing resistance to broad-spectrum antibiotics including carbapenems. Objectives: The aim of this study was to determine antimicrobial susceptibility patterns and distribut...

We distinguished the four OXA-type carbapenemase subgroup alleles present in 120 strains of Acinetobacter baumannii by using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and investigated the distributions of the OXA subgroups in clinically isolated samples. Amplification of the OXA genes blaOXA-23, blaOXA-24, blaOXA-51, and blaOXA-58 was performed by multiplex PCR. Antibiotics susceptibility test was conduc...

Objectives: This study aimed to determine the Enterobacteriaceae strains among patients who suffering diarrhea, phenotypic and genotypic characterization of ESBL-producing isolates in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
Methods: Stool samples were collected cultured different strains, PCR was done for detect ESBLs genes antibiotic susceptibility against antibiotics done.
 Results: The total number...

We aimed to investigate the clonal relationships, common sequence types, and carbapenemase genes in 177 non-repetitive blood culture isolates of Acinetobacter baumannii collected from patients at three university hospitals Turkey 2016. Molecular epidemiological characteristics were examined using pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE), multilocus typing (MLST) (Pasteur scheme-cpn60, fusA, gltA...
