High titers of a noninducible bacteriocin were produced by Clostridium acetobutylicum in a molasses fermentation medium used for the industrial production of solvents. Release of the bacteriocin towards the end of the exponential growth phase was accompanied by lysis of the culture and inhibition of the production of solvents. The producer cells were sensitive to the bacteriocin, which only aff...

Bacteriocin AMA-K produced by Lactobacillus plantarum AMA-K inhibits the growth of Enterococcus spp., Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Listeria spp. Growth of strain AMA-K in BHI, M17, soy milk and molasses was similar to growth in MRS. The effect of organic nitrogen sources, carbohydrates, glycerol, K2HPO4 and KH2PO4, MgSO4, MnSO4, tri-ammonium citrate, Tween 80, vitamins and initia...

L-forms induced from a bacteriocin-producing strain of group A streptococcus retained both the ability to produce the streptococcin and producer strain immunity to the homologous bacteriocin. L-forms of a spontaneously cured (bacteriocin negative) derivative of this same strain failed to produce streptococcin but were sensitive to its action.

A resting cell system was developed for bacteriocin Lac-B23 production from Lactobacillus paracasei J23. The resting cell medium contained (g/L): Glucose 20, Sodium acetate 5.0, MnSO4 0.25 MgSO4 0.5, Ammoniumhydrogencitrate 1.0, KH2PO4 1.0. The resting cell incubation time and temperature were 20 h and 37 °C and the effects of exogenous factors, including amino acids, glycerol, pyruvic acid, an...

The bacteriocin and hemolysin produced by a Streptococcus faecium strain were partially separated after gel filtration on Ultrogel AcA-22. The molecular weight of bacteriocin was approximately 300,000, and that of hemolysin was 220,000. Non-bacteriocinogenic mutants retained the hemolytic activity. Production of hemolysin required glucose, whereas that of bacteriocin did not.

We have found that Serratia marcescens strain P & S is bacteriocinogenic. However, the phenotypic expression of bacteriocin activity depends upon the temperature at which the cells are grown. When the organism is grown at 30 to 37 C, no bacteriocin activity can be demonstrated, whereas when it is grown at 39 C bacteriocin activity is readily observed. It appears that the P & S strain concomitan...

Bacteriocin produced by Bacillus mycoides isolated from whey showed strong inhibition against food borne serious pathogens, Listeria monocytogenes and Leuconostoc mesenteroides. Antibacterial substance was partially purified by salt saturation method. Partially purified bacteriocin withstood temperature up to 100°C, found active at wider pH range (4 to 11) and was sensitive to trypsin. This inh...

Bacteriocin-like substances were commonly produced by slow-growing Rhizobium japonicum and cowpea rhizobia on an L-arabinose medium. Antagonism between strains of R. japonicum was not detected in vitro; however, such strains were often sensitive to some bacteriocins produced by cowpea rhizobia. Inhibitory zones (2 to 8 mm from colony margins), produced by 58 of 66 R. japonicum test strains, wer...

Lactobacillus plantarum N014 was isolated from nham, a traditional Thai fermented pork, and exhibited antimicrobial activity against Listeria monocytogenes. Its bacteriocin had a broad inhibitory spectrum toward both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. The bacteriocin activity was sensitive to all proteolytic enzymes used in this study, including papain, pepsin, pronase E, proteinase K, a...

Bacteriocin production in Lactobacillus plantarum NC8 is activated by coculture with specific bacteriocin production-inducing bacterial strains. The system is further regulated by a three-component regulatory system involving a specific autoinducer peptide (PLNC8IF). We have used L. plantarum NC8 as a starter culture in Spanish-style green olive fermentations and examined the influence of cocul...
