His Master's thesis was about neuronal injury and astrogliosis. This case study reports a rare variation of the superior laryngeal artery (SLA), which is the principal arterial supply of the larynx. The knowledge of the arterial variations is essential for the surgeons to prevent blood loss and postoperative complications. During routine dissection of an adult male cadaver, a rare arterial vari...
artefacts, such as arterial blood sampling, were removed manually. The respiratory variability of the arterial pressure was compared with the variability of the plethysmograph trace in several ways. Twenty-second epochs (enclosing at least three respiratory cycles) were used to determine the periodic variability. An adjustment to the raw waveform data was made to compensate for any general upwa...
INTRODUCTION: Variations in anterolateral thigh (ALT) arterial anatomy are well documented. Ethnicity is a known risk factor for vascular variation in several organ systems, but its impact on ALT anatomy has not been studied. Anecdotally, we observed frequent ALT arterial variation in African American (AA) patients. We thus hypothesized that AA patients have higher rates of anomalous branching.

Despite considerable research efforts on the relationship between arterial geometry and cardiovascular pathology, information is lacking on the pulsatile geometrical variation caused by arterial distensibility and cardiomotility because of the lack of suitable in vivo experimental models and the methodological difficulties in examining the arterial dynamics. We aimed to investigate the feasibil...
INTRODUCTION Pulse pressure variation predicts fluid responsiveness in mechanically ventilated patients passively adapted to the ventilator. Its usefulness in actively breathing ventilated patients was examined only by few studies with potential methodological shortcomings. This study sought to describe the performance of pulse pressure variation as a predictor of fluid responsiveness in hypote...
In critically ill patients monitored with an arterial catheter, the arterial pressure signal provides two types of information that may help the clinician to interpret haemodynamic status better: the mean values of systolic, diastolic, mean and pulse pressures; and the magnitude of the respiratory variation in arterial pressure in patients undergoing mechanical ventilation. In this review we br...
Aim and Background: Arterial tourniquets are used widely for extremity orthopedic surgeries with regional or general anesthesia to reduce blood loss, but the harmful effect of ischemia and reperfusion is not clear yet. Materials and Methods: In this clinical trial 40 patients scheduled for lower extremity surgery with pneumatic tourniquet were randomized into 2 groups: a remote ischemi...
Compared with arterial hemodynamics, there has been relatively little study of venous hemodynamics. We propose that the venous system behaves just like the arterial system: waves propagate on a time-varying reservoir, the windkessel, which functions as the reverse of the arterial windkessel. During later diastole, pressure increases exponentially to approach an asymptotic value as inflow contin...
