Two patients who shared similar presenting clinical features of anterograde and retrograde autobiographical amnesia typical of transient epileptic amnesia (TEA) underwent prolonged video electroencephalogram (VEEG) monitoring and were found to have sleep-activated epileptiform activity and frequent subclinical bitemporal seizures predominantly during sleep. Case 1 is a 59-year-old woman whose p...

Associations between criminal activity and the use of psychotropic substances are well established. Flunitrazepam, specifically, has been suspected of triggering, per se, violent criminal behavior and severe memory disturbances in the form of anterograde amnesia. However, data from investigations of this relationship are scarce and have been primarily derived from forensic institutions, where t...

A picture of a nude isolated in a series of pictures of clothed models was quite memorable, but when compared with a clothed picture, the nude impaired memory for background picture derails as well as pictures immediately following the nude (anterograde amnesia). Recall of details given picture-gist recall, as well as recognition of person details, were equivalent in the clothed and nude condit...

AIMS To investigate the dynamic time course of transient global amnesia (TGA)--that is, the process of recovery and the interindividual variability--by testing four patients during the day of TGA itself (on three occasions) and at follow up (on two occasions). METHODS A specially designed protocol focusing on semantic (both conceptual and autobiographical knowledge) and episodic (both anterog...

The 53-year-old female patient had suffered massive subarachnoid bleeding due to rupture of left-localized aneurysm of the anterior communicant artery. Following the neurosurgical intervention, deterioration of consciousness related to strong vasospasm occurred. Cerebral CT examination was performed, showing a 0.5 cm ischaemic lesion of the left hippocampal fornix. Due to intensive therapy, the...

Acute transient amnesia has not been previously associated with vertebral artery dissection. We describe two men with acute onset of dense anterograde amnesia and partial retrograde amnesia resulting from spontaneous vertebral artery dissection. Both amnesic syndromes completely resolved with conservative management.

BACKGROUND Studies have suggested that benzodiazepines are amnestic drug par excellence, but when taken together, what level of evidence do they generate? Are other sedatives as amnestic as benzodiazepines? The aim of this study was to assess the level of scientific evidence for the amnestic effect of sedatives in pediatric patients who undergo health procedures. METHODS The literature was se...

Memory disturbances frequently occur after brain damage, but can be associated with psychiatric illnesses as well. Amnesia--the most severe form of memory impairment--has several variants, including anterograde and retrograde amnesia, material-specific and modality-specific amnesia, and transient global amnesia. We searched databases to obtain an overview of amnesia research from the past 5 yea...

The relationship between anterograde and retrograde amnesia remains unclear. Previous data from both clinical neuropsychology and monkey lesion studies suggest that damage to discrete subcortical structures leads to a relatively greater degree of anterograde than retrograde amnesia, whereas damage to discrete regions of cortex leads to the opposite pattern of impairments. Nevertheless, damage t...
