The Fourier optics technique is founded on the transfer function derived from the scalar wave equation and thus has traditionally been applied to monochromatic scalar fields propagating paraxially in isotropic lossless materials. We review scalar and vector diffraction theory to show that the scalar Fourier optics technique can be seamlessly extended to the case of time-dependent nonparaxial an...
We apply the equivalent theory to orthorhombic anisotropic materials and provide a general unit-cell design criterion for achieving a length-independent retrieval of the effective material parameters from a single layer of unit cells. We introduce a graphical retrieval method and phase unwrapping techniques. The graphical method utilizes the linear regression technique. Our method can reduce th...
Peridynamics (PD) represents a new approach for modelling fracture mechanics, where a continuum domain is modelled through particles connected via physical bonds. This formulation allows us to model crack initiation, propagation, branching and coalescence without special assumptions. Up to date, anisotropic materials were modelled in the PD framework as different isotropic materials (for instan...
Line integral forms for the elastic field of dislocations in anisotropic, multilayer materials are developed and utilized in Parametric Dislocation Dynamics (PDD) computer simulations. Developed equations account for interface image forces on dislocations as a result of elastic modulus mismatch between adjacent layers. The method is applied to study dislocation motion in multilayer thin films. ...
Ultrasonic materials characterization is widely used to assess both properties and defects of structural components. Recently, the option of gasor air-coupled ultrasonic testing has become a realistic possibility. In this paper we develop the application of resonant sound transmission methods through ambient air in anisotropic materials with the sound wavevector oriented in a general direction ...
Wittichenite (Cu(3)BiS(3)) nanocrystals have been synthesized utilizing a hot-injection method. They have been characterized in detail. Cu(3)BiS(3) nanocrystals possessed a band gap of 1.56 eV, and the corresponding nanocrystal-film shows a clear photoresponse in I-V measurements. Our work illustrates that Cu(3)BiS(3) nanocrystals have potential in the application of solar cells.
The issue of pressure sensitivity of anisotropic sheet metals is investigated with introducing two new non-AFR criteria which are called here linear and non-Linear pressure sensitive criteria. The yield and plastic potential functions of these criteria are calibrated with directional tensile/compressive yield stresses and directional tensile Lankford coefficients, respectively. To determine unk...
One key challenge in developing postsilicon electronic technology is to find ultrathin channel materials with high charge mobilities and sizable energy band gaps. Graphene can offer extremely high charge mobilities; however, the lack of a band gap presents a significant barrier. Transition metal dichalcogenides possess sizable and thickness-tunable band gaps; however, their charge mobilities ar...
Disordered dielectric materials with structural correlations show unconventional optical behavior: They can be transparent to long-wavelength radiation, while at the same time have isotropic band gaps in another frequency range. This phenomenon raises fundamental questions concerning photon transport through disordered media. While optical transparency in these materials is robust against recur...
