Respiratory alkalosis may be defined as a state of altered physiochemical processes due to the excessive loss of carbon dioxide through overbreathing. Though this condition is usually referred to as the hyperventilation syndrome, respiratory alkalosis would be more accurate terminology as hyperventilation may occur as a necessary physiologic requirement without producing an alkalotic state. Tha...
This is the first case reported of vomiting-induced metabolic alkalosis associated with myoclonus. The report describes an unusual presentation of myoclonus secondary to acid-base disturbance caused by recreational drug-induced vomiting. The severe derangement of hyponatraemia, hypokalaemia, and alkalosis appears to have been reasonably well tolerated due to the gradual onset and relatively lon...
Although hyperventilation is a well-known compensatory mechanism in metabolic acidosis, compensatory hypoventilation has been inconsistent and confroversial in metabolic alkalosis. Six healthy subjects were studied under baseline conditions and during steady-state metabolic acidosis (seven episodes) and alkalosis (14 episodes). Minute ventilation (yE) fell in metabolic alkalosis and rose in met...
Received: Revised: Accepted: September 18, 2014 September 27, 2014 October 15, 2014 In this study, the effect of fermentative disorders such as acid and alkaline indigestion was investigated in buffaloes. Six buffaloes each suffering from acid and alkaline indigestion was chosen and various physiological parameters were compared with six healthy buffaloes Clinical examination was carried out to...
The present studies examined the effects of chronic NaCl administration and metabolic alkalosis on NHE-3, an apical Na+/H+exchanger of the rat medullary thick ascending limb of Henle (MTAL). NaCl administration had no effect on NHE-3 mRNA abundance as assessed by competitive RT-PCR, as well as on NHE-3 transport activity estimated from the Na+-dependent cell pH recovery of Na+-depleted acidifie...
KONTOS, HERMES A., DAVID W RICHARDSON, A. JARRELL RAPER, ZUBAIR-UL-HASSAN, AND JOHN L. PATTERSON, JR. Mechanisms of action of hypocapnic alkalosis on limb blood vessels in man and dog. Am. J. Physiol. 223(6) : 1296-1307. 1972.-The mechanisms of action of hypocapnic alkalosis on limb blood vessels were investigated in man and in the anesthetized dog. In man hypocapnic alkalosis was produced by v...
Duodenal diaphragm is an unusual cause of upper intestinal obstruction. We present here a neonate with duodenal diaphragm who presented with features of metabolic alkalosis. Further, an algorithm of management of metabolic alkalosis in a newborn is suggested.
A case of hypochloraemic metabolic alkalosis in an infant with chloride losing ileostomy drainage and cystic fibrosis is described. It is speculated that intestinal loss of chloride played a major role in the development of metabolic alkalosis.
Introduction: This case report aimed to highlight the prominence of considering Cushing's disease in differential diagnosis severe hypokalemia and metabolic alkalosis.
Case Report: A 63-year-old woman who admitted emergency room Bezmialem Vakif University Hospital, Istanbul with fatigue weakness extremities. Biochemistry results indicated (potassium=1.2 mmol/L) alkalosis (pH= 7.83) based ...
