Twenty-six years ago it was found that the common soil bacterium Agrobacterium tumefaciens is capable of extraordinary feats of interkingdom genetic transfer. Since this discovery, A. tumefaciens has served as a model system for the study of type IV bacterial secretory systems, horizontal gene transfer and bacterial-plant signal exchange. It has also been modified for controlled genetic transfo...
Up to 39% yields of 3-ketomaltose were achieved in 18 to 22 hr when Agrobacterium tumefaciens NRRL B-36 was cultured at 25 to 28 C in a simple medium containing 4.0 to 8.0% maltose, 0.09% urea, 0.5% CaCO(3), 0.6% KH(2)PO(4), and 0.025% MgSO(4).7H(2)O. For maximum production of 3-ketomaltose the culture had to be maintained approximately at pH 7.0.
Crown gall disease caused by the bacterium Agrobacterium tumefaciens can cause significant economic loss in both commercial walnut orchards and in nursery operations in California. This results from the fact that, Paradox, one of the most popular walnut rootstocks in California, is extremely susceptible to A. tumefaciens infection and Crown Gall formation. By combining direct soil-DNA extractio...
Beardsley, Robert E. (Manhattan College, Bronx, N.Y.), and Jacques Lipetz Effects of 5-fluorouracil and 5-fluorodeoxyuridine on growth and tumor-inducing ability of Agrobacterium tumefaciens. J. Bacteriol. 92:346-348. 1966.-Agrobacterium tumefaciens B6, grown in the presence of 5-fluorouracil or 5-fluodeoxyuridine, exhibited a prolonged lag phase. The tumor-inducing ability of bacteria grown in...
Hypericum perforatum L. (St. John’s wort) is a well-known medicinal plant that possesses secondary metabolites with beneficial pharmacological properties. However, improvement in the production of via genetic manipulation challenging task as H. remains recalcitrant to Agrobacterium tumefaciens-mediated transformation. Here, transcripts key genes involved several defence responses (secondary met...
Agrobacterium-mediated transformation is a commonly used method for plant genetic engineering. However, the limitations of Agrobacterium host-plant interactions and the complexity of plant tissue culture often make the production of transgenic plants difficult. Transformation efficiency in many legume species, including soybean and the common bean, has been reported to be quite low. To improve ...
