There has been growing concern over human exposure to adenoviruses through drinking water due to the extreme resistance of human adenoviruses to the traditional UV technology (low-pressure (LP) UV). As an effort to develop an effective treatment strategy against human adenoviruses in drinking water, we determined the effectiveness of sequential disinfection with an alternative UV technology (me...
Human sera from the United States, Thailand, and sub-Saharan Africa and chimpanzee sera were tested for neutralizing antibodies to 3 chimpanzee adenoviruses. Antibodies were more common in humans residing in sub-Saharan Africa than in humans living in the United States or Thailand. This finding suggests cross-species transmission of chimpanzee adenoviruses.
BACKGROUND Human Adenoviruses are recognized pathogens, causing a broad spectrum of diseases. Serotype identification is critical for epidemiological surveillance, detection of new strains and understanding of HAdvs pathogenesis. Little data is available about HAdvs subtypes in Latin America. METHODS In this study, we have molecularly characterized 213 adenoviruses collected from ILI presenti...
Pathogenic bacteria and enteric viruses can be introduced into the environment via human waste discharge. Methods for rapid detection and quantification of human viruses and fecal indicator bacteria in water are urgently needed to prevent human exposure to pathogens through drinking and recreational waters. Here we describe the development of two real-time PCR methods to detect and quantify hum...
African nonhuman primate and rodent erythrocytes were tested for agglutination by adenoviruses, reoviruses, and enteroviruses. Squirrel erythrocytes were agglutinated by reovirus serotypes and adenovirus types 3, 11, 16, and 21. Adenoviruses also agglutinated brazza monkey erythrocytes to the same titers as those obtained with either rhesus or grey monkey cells. Prototype reovirus types 1 and 2...
Human fecal matter contains a large number of viruses, and current bacterial indicators used for monitoring water quality do not correlate with the presence of pathogenic viruses. Adenoviruses and enteroviruses have often been used to identify fecal pollution in the environment; however, other viruses shed in fecal matter may more accurately detect fecal pollution. The purpose of this study was...
Enteric adenovirus type 40 (Ad40) and Ad41 form the sixth subgenus of human adenoviruses. They are associated with infantile diarrhea but cannot be isolated in conventional cell cultures. The genome of the fastidious enteric Ad41 has been cloned, and the cleavage sites of the genome produced by restriction endonucleases BamHI, EcoRI, HpaI, NruI, PvuI, and SalI have been mapped. To develop usefu...
Adenoviruses are medium-sized, nonenveloped viruses with an icosahedral nucleocapsid containing a double stranded DNA genome. Adenoviruses causes 57 distinct adenoviral serotypes from mild respiratory infections in young children to life-threatening multi-organ disease especially only in human. To be specific, to track out the particular reason why adenoviruses reacts negatively only to human i...
