We acoustically modulated the localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPRs) of metal nanostructures integrated within microfluidic systems. An acoustically driven micromixing device based on bubble microstreaming quickly and homogeneously mixes multiple laminar flows of different refractive indices. The altered refractive index of the mixed fluids enables rapid modulation of the LSPRs of gold na...
The ability to drive microcentrifugation for efficient micromixing and particle concentration and separation on a microfluidic platform is critical for a wide range of lab-on-a-chip applications. In this work, we investigate the use of amplitude modulation to enhance the efficiency of the microcentrifugal recirculation flows in surface acoustic wave microfluidic systems, thus concomitantly redu...
The development of microfluidic systems is often constrained both by difficulties associated with the chip interconnection to other instruments and by limitations imposed by the mechanisms that can enable fluid movement and processing. Surface acoustic wave (SAW) devices have shown promise in allowing samples to be manipulated, although designing complex fluid operations involves using multiple...
We present a novel concept of generating both static and pulsatile chemical gradients using acoustically activated bubbles designed in a ladder-like arrangement. Furthermore, by regulating the amplitude of the bubble oscillation, we demonstrate that the chemical gradient profiles can be effectively tuned.
A novel approach toward the needs of a versatile chip-based microfluidic system with unique properties and functionality is reviewed. Like for microarrays and in contrast to many existing technologies, the fluid handling is performed on the flat surface of a programmable chip, where fluidic tracks and functional blocks such as valves, dispensers, mixers, and sensing elements are chemically defi...
Performance and utility of microfluidic systems are often overshadowed by the difficulties and costs associated with operation and control. As a step toward the development of a more efficient platform for microfluidic control, we present a distributed pressure generation scheme whereby independently tunable pressure sources can be simultaneously controlled by using a single acoustic source. We...
