the present article considers the nd:yag pulsed laser welding of 304 stainless steels with two different compositions. the effects of various laser operational parameters and cooling rates on the weld microstructures were considered. the results show that ferritic solidification is produced in the stainless steel with the creq/nieq ratio of 1.7, and austenitic solidification is produced in the ...

OBJECTIVES SUS 304 stainless steels have been widely used in orthodontics and implants such as archwires, brackets, and screws. The purpose of present study was to investigate the biocompatibility of both the commercial microcrystalline biomedical 304 stainless steel (microcrystalline 304ss) and novel-fabricated nanocrystalline 304 stainless steel (nanocrystalline 304ss). METHODS Bulk nanocry...

The temperature of a Fe-Cr-Ni alloy (304 stainless steel) has been measured during shock compression using a high-speed radiometric technique. Experiments were performed on highquality thick films deposited on sapphire and LiF windows. The samples had no observable porosity or defects and closely meet the ideal criteria for shock temperature measurements. Data obtained with both A1203 and LiF w...

Fifteen different isolates of Pseudomonas aeruginosa were used to study the kinetics of adhesion to 304 and 316-L stainless steel. Stainless steel plates were incubated with approximately 1.5 X 10(7) CFU/ml in 0.01 M phosphate-buffered saline (pH 7.4). After the plates were rinsed with the buffer, the number of adhering bacteria was determined by a bioluminescence assay. Measurable adhesion, ev...

A novel cobalt-chromium (CoCr) based alloy, optimised for speciality needle applications, has been benchmarked against Type 304 stainless steel in a series of mechanical test and experimental needle trials. The results reported indicate that the CoCr alloy has the potential to overcome current limitations in endoscopic and minimally invasive surgery.

Low carbon steels are widely used for structural applications because of its ease in fabrication and the moderate strength it posses. However, its pure corrosion resistance at normal atmosphere is a matter of serious concern.

. Void swelling and radiation-induced segregation have been measured in 304 stainless steel. Samples were irradiated in the outer regions of the EBR-11reactor where displacement rates of 2.OX10-8and 6.6 xl 0-8dpds are comparable to those in pressurized water reactor components. Samples were inadiated at temperatures from 371-390°C to total doses of up to 20 dpa. Void swelling reached a maximum ...

We have developed a method for forming carbon nanotubes (CNTs) directly on the surfaces of stainless steel materials that are important industrially. Using plasma-assisted chemical vapor deposition (PCVD), CNTs are formed at comparatively low temperatures, thus avoiding excessive annealing and degradation of the stainless steel. Because the catalytic metals needed for CNT formation are containe...

Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) was used to detect stress corrosion cracking (SCC) in stainless steel 304 alloy exposed to an aqueous environment at 120 °C. Stainless steel 304 alloy as u-bend was tested in the solution that contains 40 weight percent of magnesium chloride. U-bended samples were prepared according to ASTM G30. EIS measurements were always performed simultaneously o...

Thanks to the collaboration between two laboratories, we present different techniques to measure thermal diffusivity. A brief description of any technique both in the experimental layout and in the processing algorithms is given. Results obtained on samples cut from the same block of stainless steel AISI 304, are reported. Uncertainty evaluation of any measurement is reported as well.
