OBJECTIVE To compare the suitability of CO2 laser with steel instruments for margin excision in transoral laser microsurgery. METHODS Prospective randomized blinded study. Patients with glottic cancer undergoing laser resection were randomized to margin excision by either steel instruments or CO2 laser. Margins were analyzed for size, interpretability and degree of artifact by a pathologist w...

INTRODUCTION Prognosis of intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC) remained poor despite the multitude advancement of medical care. Resection margin status is one of the few modifiable factors that a surgeon could possibly manipulate to alter the disease outcome. However, the significance of margin status and margin width is still controversial. This study serves to further elucidate the role of t...

UNLABELLED Study Type - Prognosis (case series) Level of Evidence 4 What's known on the subject? and What does the study add? Only 30-35% of patients with positive surgical margins after radical prostatectomy develop recurrent disease. Adjuvant radiotherapy reduces the rate of biochemical relapse or metastasis and improves overall survival after radical prostatectomy. Various pathological facto...

PURPOSE Positive surgical margins have a negative impact on disease outcomes after radical prostatectomy, yet their prognostic value may vary depending on specific pathological characteristics. We examined the relationship of positive surgical margins to biochemical progression according to several clinicopathological features. MATERIALS AND METHODS We analyzed data from 1,268 patients who un...

OBJECTIVES To assess whether reporting the grade of cancer at the site of positive margins in a radical prostatectomy (RP) specimen was independently prognostic of the outcome. METHODS We restricted our study to 108 patients with Gleason score (GS) 7, nonfocal extraprostatic extension (EPE) (Stage pT3a), and positive surgical margins. Patients with a tertiary pattern 5, those who had received...

OBJECTIVES To correlate the extent and location of positive surgical margins after radical prostatectomy with disease progression. METHODS Data on 495 patients who underwent radical prostatectomy by one surgeon were analyzed. All radical prostatectomy specimens were sectioned entirely using 2 to 3-mm step sections by one pathologist. One hundred fifty-one patients (30.5%) had one or more posi...

BACKGROUND Melanoma in situ (MIS) accounts for up to 27% of all melanomas. MIS has no metastatic potential and the aim should be to excise the lesion completely with a clear histological margin, although margin clearance remains undefined. We aimed to assess the relation of histological excision margins of MIS to recurrence and progression to invasive disease. METHODS We analyzed all patients...

Intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) is one of a standard treatment for localized prostate cancer. Although lower complication is expected for smaller target margin, determination of optimal margin is important. For bony-structure based registration, internal prostate motion is the main factor determining the margin from clinical target volume to planning target volume. The purpose of t...

A new species of porcellanid crab, Petrolisthes tuerkayi n. sp., is described from the Persian Gulf. The new species is closely related to P. rufescens Heller, 1861, but is easily distinguishable by having three or four large spines distally on the posterior margin of the carpus of chelipeds, whereas the posterior margin of the cheliped merus in P. rufescens is unarmed.
