Regarding the influence of ultraviolet irradiation on the growth of bacteria, numerous studies have been accomplished and it has been known that there exists a relation of exponential function between the bactericidal effect and the amount of ultraviolet ray irradiated. The methods employed in those studies,1),2),3),4) a,b, however, are mostly so called plate method in which the irradiation is ...

conclusions anova results showed that the effect of cycle and time on the selected bacterial removal efficiency were more important than that of the microbial concentration. results the results showed that e. coli and e. faecalis were effectively treated at 10 pulse/s in 9 minutes and 6 log cfu/ml bacterial suspension (p < 0.0001 for e. coli with 99.99% (4 log) and p = 0.0002 for e. faecalis wi...

Alteromonas haloplanktis ejected protons in response to a brief respiratory pulse; the rate of decay of the resulting pH change was accelerated when Na+ was present in the suspension medium. The addition of an anaerobic NaCl solution to an essentially Na+-free anaerobic bacterial suspension induced the acidification of the suspension medium. These results and others discussed provide substantia...

We present a deep XMM-Newton observation of the z = 6.30 QSO SDSS J1030+0524, the second most distant quasar currently known. The data contain sufficient counts for spectral analysis, demonstrating the ability of XMM-Newton to measure X-ray spectral shapes of z ∼ 6 QSOs with integration times & 100ks. The X-ray spectrum is well fit by a power law with index Γ = 2.12 ± 0.11, an optical-X-ray spe...
