The incidence and numbers of enterotoxigenic Clostridium perfringens in the intestinal contents of cattle, swine and broiler chickens were determined and compared with those of total (enterotoxigenic and nonenterotoxigenic) C. perfringens. The method used for the enumeration of enterotoxigenic C. perfringens consisted of a combination of the most probable number (MPN) method and a nested polyme...
BACKGROUND The germline telomerase reverse transcriptase (TERT) rs2736100_C variant was identified as a susceptibility factor for a variety of solid tumors and recently for myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPN). METHODS LightCycler melting curve analysis was applied to detect risk alleles of TERT rs2736100_C and Janus kinase 2 (JAK2) rs12343867_C tagging 46/1 haplotype in 584 BCR-ABL1-negative M...
Interferon-α (IFNα) is an effective treatment of patients with myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs). In addition to inducing hematological responses in most MPN patients, IFNα reduces the JAK2V617F allelic burden and can render the JAK2V617F mutant clone undetectable in some patients. The precise mechanism underlying these responses is incompletely understood and whether the molecular responses ...
Motor pattern selection from a multifunctional neural network often results from direct synaptic and modulatory actions of different projection neurons onto neural network components. Less well documented is the presence and function of interactions among distinct projection neurons innervating the same network. In the stomatogastric nervous system of the crab Cancer borealis, several distinct ...
BACKGROUND A dry epicardial access (EA) is increasingly used for advanced cardiovascular procedures. Conventionally used large bore needles (Tuohy or Pajunk needle; LBN) have been associated with low but definite incidence of major complications with EA. Use of micropuncture needle (MPN) may decrease the risk of complications. We intended to compare the outcomes of LBN with MPN for EA. METHOD...
Dear Editor, The WHO 2008 classification of myeloid neoplasms lists the following three diagnostic criteria for AML with myelodysplasia-related changes (MRC): AML arising from a previously diagnosed myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) or MDS/myeloproliferative neoplasm (MPN), AML with an MDS-related cytogenetic abnormality, and AML with multi-lineage dysplasia [1]. However, a history of Philadelphia...
BACKGROUND Myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs) including the classic entities; polycythemia vera (PV), essential thrombocythemia (ET) and primary myelofibrosis are rare diseases with unknown aetiology. The MOSAICC study, is an exploratory case-control study in which information was collected through telephone questionnaires and medical records. METHODS As part of the study, 106 patients with ...
OBJECTIVE Proliferative activity contributes to bone marrow cellularity in myeloproliferative neoplasia (MPN). Megakaryocytes are the most important cells in MPN bone marrow pathology. JAK2(V617F) mutation constitutively activates JAK2, pErk (phosphorylating extracellular signal-regulated kinase) and PI3K (phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase)-Akt signaling. Erk is involved in megakaryocyte differenti...
L. monocytogenes is a foodborne psychrotrophic bacterial pathogen of special importance for minimally processed foods. In this work, it was enumerated in samples of surubim fish by MPN technique. The population of L. monocytogenes was estimated as < 0.012 MPN/cm(2) in fresh and < 0.03 MPN/g in minimally processed fish.
Lenalidomide is an immunomodulatory drug which is used to treat patients with MDS with deletion 5q chromosomal abnormality. In 2008, WHO introduced a new disease entity called MDS/MPN. No specific treatment for MDS/MPN subtype has yet been identified. We report a patient with MDS/MPN who responded well to lenalidomide therapy.
