The amplification of RNA is becoming increasingly important, as often only limited amounts of cells are available for gene expression analysis. In this study, the gene expression profile of the 39 human homeobox (HOX) genes was analyzed in bone marrow-derived multipotent stromal cells (BM-MSCs) by reverse transcription (RT-) and quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR). For further unlimit...

The objectives of this study were to investigate the immune response to intradermal immunization with wall teichoic acid (WTA) and the effect of MBL deficiency in a murine model of infection with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). WTA is a bacterial cell wall component that is implicated in invasive infection. We tested susceptibility to MRSA infection in wild type (WT) and MBL...

WTA (Winner Take All) hashing has been successfully applied in many large scale vision applications. This hashing scheme was tailored to take advantage of the comparative reasoning (or order based information), which showed significant accuracy improvements. In this paper, we identify a subtle issue with WTA, which grows with the sparsity of the datasets. This issue limits the discriminative po...

In other words whatever can be obtained from assumption A can still be obtained if we add to A more assumptions. In many cases, reasoning is non-monotonic. Consider the story below of the World-Trave-Agency (WTA). The story shall serve as the basis for introducing a system of non-monotonic logic. WTA offers package tours from New York to Paris and Stuttgart. Every Sunday, a group of New Yorkers...

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES Economic theory classifies an intervention as socially beneficial if the total Willingness to Pay (WTP) of those who gain exceeds the total Willingness to accept (WTA) of those who are harmed. This paper examines the differences in health system users' valuation of a health care service in primary care setting based on the WTP and WTA perspectives, discussing the impact...

We propose a winner-takes-all (WTA) classifier for structures represented by graphs. WTA classification follows the principle elimination of competition. The input structure is assigned to the class corresponding to the winner of the competition. In experiments we investigate the performance of the WTA classifier and compare it with the canonical maximum similarity (MS) classifier.

Wall teichoic acid (WTA) or related polyanionic cell wall glycopolymers are produced by most gram-positive bacterial species and have been implicated in various cellular functions. WTA and the proton gradient across bacterial membranes are known to control the activity of autolysins but the molecular details of these interactions are poorly understood. We demonstrate that WTA contributes substa...

We examined the relationship between PGC-1alpha protein; the monocarboxylate transporters MCT1, 2, and 4; and CD147 1) among six metabolically heterogeneous rat muscles, 2) in chronically stimulated red (RTA) and white tibialis (WTA) muscles (7 days), and 3) in RTA and WTA muscles transfected with PGC-1alpha-pcDNA plasmid in vivo. Among rat hindlimb muscles, there was a strong positive associat...

The problem of efficiently minimizing deterministic weighted tree automata (wta) is investigated. Such automata have found promising applications as language models in Natural Language Processing. A polynomial-time algorithm is presented that given a deterministic wta over a commutative semifield, of which all operations including the computation of the inverses are polynomial, constructs an eq...

Many empirical studies have demonstrated large discrepancies between willingness to accept (WTA) and willingness to pay (WTP) measures. This paper examines the extent to which uncertainty about the environmental quality improvement can lead to a divergence between WTP and WTA measures. Indirect utility function parameters and uncertainty about the environmental quality change affect the extent ...
