Hybrid strains Escherichia coli acquires genetic characteristics from multiple pathotypes and is speculated to be more virulent; however, understanding their pathogenicity elusive. Here, we performed genome-based characterization of the hybrid enteropathogenic (EPEC) enterotoxigenic E. (ETEC), that cause diarrhea mortality in children. The virulence genes isolated different sources South Korea ...

The virulence of enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) is attributed to their ability to adhere via fimbrial adhesins to specific receptors located on the intestinal mucosa. A novel approach to preventing ETEC induced diarrhoea would be to prevent attachment of ETEC to intestine by proteolytically modifying the receptor attachment sites. This study aimed to examine the effect of bromelain, a ...

This study was conducted to investigate the effect of Lactobacillus zeae LB2 on gut microbiota in piglets infected with enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC). Thirty-two healthy 7-day-old were randomly divided into four treatment groups: control group (basal diet), (supplemented 1 × 108 CFU/pig/day L. LB2), ETEC (infected 1010 ETEC) and ETEC+LB2 (LB2 supplementation + infection). Intestinal ...

The goal of this study was to isolate and characterize phages that might be used in prevention and treatment of porcine post-weaning diarrhea due to O149 enterotoxigenic E. coli (ETEC). Serotype O149:H10:F4 was especially targeted because this is the dominant ETEC serotype. Mixtures of 10 strains of O149:H10:F4 ETEC and of 10 O149:H43:F4 ETEC were used as hosts for isolation of phages in sewage...

Diarrhea continues to be a leading cause of death in children <5 years of age, and enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) is the most common bacterial cause of children's diarrhea. Currently, there are no available vaccines against ETEC-associated diarrhea. Whole-cell vaccine candidates have been under development but require further improvements because they provide inadequate protection and ...

Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) is a common cause of diarrhea among children living in and among travelers visiting developing countries. Human ETEC strains represent an epidemiologically and phenotypically diverse group of pathogens, and there is a need to identify natural groupings of these organisms that may help to explain this diversity. Here, we sought to identify most of the impo...

The cause of infantile diarrhoea was investigated with the use of Biken test and animal assay for toxigenic bacteria. EnterOtoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) was recovered in 39 cases (17.3%). Of these 30 patients (13.3%) were infected with heat-labile (LT+ETEC) and 7 (3.1%) with heat-stable producing ETEC (ST+ETEC) and 2 (0.9%) with both toxins producing strains (LT+/ST~ETEC). Majority of case...

Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) is a leading cause of diarrhea worldwide. Adhesion to the human intestinal tract is crucial for colonization. ETEC adhesive structures have been extensively studied; however, colonization dynamics remain uncharacterized. The aim of this study was to track bioluminescent ETEC during in vivo infection. The promoter region of dnaK was fused with the luc gene...

Achieving cross-protective efficacy against multiple bacterial strains or serotypes is an important goal of vaccine design. Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) is an important cause of diarrheal disease in underdeveloped nations. We have been interested in identifying and characterizing ETEC antigens that generate protective immune responses independent of ETEC colonization factor (CF) expr...

Four multiplex PCR assays for detection of 19 enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) colonization factors and an improved ETEC toxin multiplex PCR were developed and tested on Bangladeshi and Bolivian ETEC strain collections. The assays will be useful for surveillance of ETEC infections in diagnostic laboratories that have access to PCR.
