Overuse and misuse of antibiotics leads to rapid evolution of antibiotic-resistant bacteria and antibiotic resistance genes. Klebsiella pneumoniae has become the most common pathogenic bacterium accountable for nosocomial infections due to its high virulence factor and general occurrence of resistance to most antibiotics. The β-lactamase signaling pathway has been suggested to be involved in an...

The production of β-lactamase enzymes is the main mechanism of resistance to β-lactam antibiotics in gramnegative bacilli. Therefore, it is important to identify the β-lactamases-producing bacteria for the treatment of caused infections. This article aimed to review the recent literature and guidelines regarding phenotypic detection of β-lactamases in common gram-negative bacilli in clinical sa...

Acidovorax sp. strain MR-S7 was isolated from activated sludge in a treatment system for wastewater containing β-lactam antibiotic pollutants. Strain MR-S7 demonstrates multidrug resistance for various types of β-lactam antibiotics at high levels of MIC. The draft genome sequence clarified that strain MR-S7 harbors unique β-lactamase genes.

BACKGROUND Concern for serious infection due to β-lactam-resistant viridans group streptococci (VGS) is a major factor driving empiric use of an anti-gram-positive antimicrobial in patients with febrile neutropenia. We sought to develop and validate a prediction model for the presence of β-lactam resistance in VGS causing bloodstream infection (BSI) in neutropenic patients. METHODS Data from ...

The high prevalence of methicillin resistance among Staphylococcus aureus bacteremias leads to common use of vancomycin as empirical therapy. However, investigators have reported poor outcomes with vancomycin treatment for methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia. We review the evidence supporting empirical combination of both vancomycin and a β-lactam agent for Staphylococcus a...

This study aimed to evaluate the in vitro combination of farnesol and β-lactams against Burkholderia pseudomallei. A total of 12 β-lactamase-positive strains were tested according to CLSI standards. All strains were inhibited by farnesol, with MICs ranging from 75 to 150 μM. The combination of this compound with β-lactams resulted in statistically significant β-lactam MIC reduction (P ≤ 0.05). ...

β-Lactamases inactivate β-lactam antibiotics by hydrolysis of their endocyclic β-lactam bond and are a major cause of antibiotic resistance in pathogenic bacteria. The zinc dependent metallo-β-lactamase enzymes are of particular concern since they are located on highly transmissible plasmids and have a broad spectrum of activity against almost all β-lactam antibiotics. We present here essential...

Our investigations show that nonlethal concentrations of nitric oxide (NO) abrogate the antibiotic activity of β-lactam antibiotics against Burkholderia pseudomallei, Escherichia coli and nontyphoidal Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium. NO protects B. pseudomallei already exposed to β-lactams, suggesting that this diatomic radical tolerizes bacteria against the antimicrobial activity of th...

Tuberculosis (TB), caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb), is a worldwide health concern. The world health organization in its 2017 tuberculosis report states, “TB is the ninth leading cause of death worldwide and the leading cause from a single infectious agent, ranking above HIV/AIDS” [1-3]. The failure to control TB is due to the emergence of Mtb strains that are resistant to first line ...

Due to the ongoing concern about the reliability of Staphylococcus breakpoints (interpretive criteria) for other β-lactam agents, the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute recently approved the elimination of all breakpoints for antistaphylococcal β-lactams except for penicillin, oxacillin or cefoxitin, and ceftaroline. Routine testing of penicillin and oxacillin or cefoxitin should be us...
