We used a slide culture technique to detect tubercle bacilli surviving in sputum smears (n=46) after conventional heat fixation and Ziehl-Neelsen staining. In all heat-fixed sputum smears, tubercle bacilli survived after time 0 (n=22), 24 h (n=7), 48 h (n=7), 72 h (n=4), and seven days (n=6). None of the stained sputum smears showed growth on slide cultures. Viable tubercle bacilli remaining in...

Abstract Background and objectives: Direct smear microscopy, because of its simplicity, rapidity, low cost and relatively sensitive is a suitable method to detecting pulmonary tuberculosis. This experiment was aimed at determining the best method for detecting Mycobacterium tuberculosis among three kinds of staining methods: Fluorochrome, Ziehl Neelsen and Tan Thiam Hok . Material and Methods: ...

AIM The aim of this study is evaluation of molecular assay and the standard staining method. BACKGROUND Cryptosporidium is a protozoon from coccidian subclass, which is one of the most important causes of diarrhea in children and immunocompromised individuals around the world. Diagnosis and treatment are necessary for mentioned cases. Usual diagnostic method for this parasite is fecal smear p...

Objective. To determine the Cryptosporidium spp. infection frequency by using Ziehl-Neelsen and Auramine stains on samples obtained from diarrheic calves from milking farms of the Valdivia province. To compare both diagnostic tests and to determine the geospatial distribution of the infections caused by this protozoan. Materials and methods. 221 fecal samples of diarrheic calves of 24 milking f...

Cryptosporidium parasite has gained an attention as an emerging pathogen in the last few decades. It is a zoonotic and is transmitted via the fecal-oral route; this has been implicated as one of the more important opportunistic infections in patients with Acquired immune deficiency syndrome. The results showed the presence of Cryptosporidium oocyst in fecal of sheep (11.1 and 22.2%), goats (15....
