The parallaxes of eight galactic X-ray sources measured by Hipparcos are consistent with zero in all but two cases, 4U1145-619 (= Cen X-5) and HZ43. The parallax and proper motion measured for each of the others, including the Be/neutron star binaries X Per and A0535+26 and the massive X-ray binaries 4U0900-40, 4U1700-37, and Cyg XR-1, are consistent with their spectroscopic parallaxes. These r...
Chandra’s high angular resolution can resolve emission from stellar X-ray binaries out of the diffuse X-ray emission from gaseous atmospheres within elliptical galaxies. Variations in the X-ray binary populations (per unit galaxian optical luminosity) are correlated with variations in the specific frequency of globular clusters in ellipticals. This indicates that X-ray binaries are largely form...
Jets are ubiquitous in accreting black holes. Often ignored, they may be a major contributor to the emitted spectral energy distribution for sub-Eddington black holes. For example, recent observations of radio-to-X-ray correlations and broad band spectra of X-ray binaries in the low/hard state can be explained by a significant synchrotron contribution from jets also to their IR-to-X-ray spectru...
Galactic accretion driven stellar X-ray sources can be divided into groups in different ways. An important division, which covers almost all known X-ray binaries, can be made according to the mass of the donor star: high-mass X-ray binaries and low-mass X-ray binaries. Another distinction (partially overlapping with the previous one) can be made on the basis of the nature of the accreting objec...
About 200 X-ray sources from a sample of spectrally hard ROSAT PSPC sources, given in the catalog of Haberl & Pietsch (1999), and observed in a ∼60 square degree field of the LMC during several archival pointed observations with a wide range of exposure times have been reanalyzed. For these sources accurate count rates and hardness ratios have been recalculated. In comparison to Haberl & Pietsc...
We report the results of a deep Chandra survey of the Sculptor dwarf spheroidal galaxy. We find five X-ray sources with LX of at least 6 × 10 ergs/sec with optical counterparts establishing them as members of Sculptor. These X-ray luminosities indicate that these sources are X-ray binaries, as no other known class of Galactic point sources can reach 0.5-8 keV luminosities this high. Finding the...
INTEGRAL monitoring of the Galactic Plane is revealing a growing number of recurrent X-ray transients, characterised by short outbursts with very fast rise times (∼ tens of minutes) and typical durations of a few hours. Here we show that several of these transients are associated with OB supergiants and hence define a new class of massive X-ray binaries which we call Supergiant Fast X-ray Trans...
In this paper we investigate the X-ray spectra and X-ray spectral variability of compact X-ray sources for 3 Chandra observations of the Local Group galaxy M33. The observations are centered on the nucleus and the star forming region NGC 604. In the observations 261 sources have been detected. For a total of 43 sources the number of net counts is above 100, sufficient for a more detailed spectr...
We report on the Chandra X-ray Observatory ACIS-S3 imaging observation of the Galactic globular cluster M4 (NGC6121). We detect 12 X-ray sources inside the core and 19 more within the cluster halfmass radius. The limiting luminosity of this observation is Lx ≈ 10 29 erg s for sources associated with the cluster, the deepest X-ray observation of a globular cluster to date. We identify 6 X-ray so...
