In this tutorial paper, the basic principles of the ultra wideband impulse radio (IR-UWB) technology are covered. Pulse construction and signaling formats are discussed, along with channel models suited to the IR-UWB system design and assessment. Some reception techniques are also presented, with emphasis on the time reversal. The paper also highlights some applications of the IR-UWB technology.

With the beginning of the new information era, necessity of wideband wireless communica‐ tions technology is increasing rapidly due to the need to support more users and to provide information with higher data transmitting rates. Ultra-wideband (UWB) technology could be the most suitable technologies that promise to revolutionize high data rate transmission and enable the personal area networki...

Ultra wideband (UWB) technology based primarily on the impulse radio paradigm has a huge potential for revolutionizing the world of digital communications especially wireless communications. UWB provides the integrated capabilities of data communications, advanced radar and precision tracking, location, imperceptibility and low power operation. It is therefore ideally suited for the development...

Ultra-wideband (UWB) radio is a transmission technology that is based on short pulses, whose spectral width is on the order of several GHz. UWB signals are free of sine-wave carriers, and their duty cycle and power spectral density are low. These characteristics provide UWB radio with unique advantages: improved immunity to multi-path fading, increased ranging resolution, large tolerance to int...

Impulse-radio ultra-wideband (IR-UWB) is a promising transmission scheme, especially for short-range low-data-rate communications, as, e.g., in wireless-sensor networks. One of the main reasons for this is its potential to employ noncoherent, hence low-complexity, receivers even in dense multipath propagation scenarios, where channel estimation required for coherent detection would be overly co...

approved: _____________________________________________________ Huaping Liu Ultra-wideband (UWB) radio is the transmission of data using an extremely wide bandwidth and very low power spectral density. In this thesis, the merits and challenges of UWB architectures versus conventional narrowband architectures will be compared. Pulsed UWB systems can be implemented with very simple architectures....

Ultra wide bandwidth (UWB) signals are commonly defined as signals that have a large relative bandwidth (bandwidth divided by the carrier frequency) or a large absolute bandwidth. Typical indoor environments contain multiple walls and obstacles consisting of different materials. The RF ultra wideband (UWB) system is a promising technology for indoor localisation owing to its high bandwidth that...

The recent surge in the demand for low power portable wireless electronics that can offer extremely high data rates has resulted in much active research in Ultra-Wideband (UWB) systems. UWB is widely recognized as a promising technology for high data rate, short-range applications with precise time resolution and high energy efficiency. All these benefits originate from the wideband characteris...

Data communications is going to wireless everywhere, from computer keyboard to Internet, from sensor networks to embedded systems. The spread of wireless communications is blocked by the fact that the radio channels have been already assigned to conventional communication systems and except a very few and crowded ISM bands there are no empty channels. Radio communications via channels already o...

A reconfigurable impulse radio ultra-wideband (UWB) pulse generator for various UWB shapes (e.g., monocycle, doublet, and triplet pulses) based on a nonlinear optical loop mirror (NOLM) and differential detection is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The proposed approach can be used with different modulation formats and may be suitable for implementation in future low-cost, high-speed, ...
