background : the aim of this study was to determine the antibacterial activity of zataria multiflora boiss (avishan-e shirazi) and carum copticum (zenian) extracts on vibrio cholerae american type culture collection (atcc14035)and v. cholerae persian type culture collection (ptcc1611) strains. methods : antimicrobial effects of the extracts were assayed by disc diffusion and broth microdilution...
cholera is an infection of the small intestines caused by the bacterium v. cholerae. it is a major cause of health threat and also a major cause of death worldwide and especially in developing countries. the major virulence factor produced by v. cholerae during infection is the cholera toxin. total mrna extraction and reverse transcription was performed for making ctxab cdna. relative real-time...
24 Vibrio cholerae serotype O1 causes diarrhea in many developing countries around the world. In most cases, cholera patients pose some sorts of immunity against the naturally occurring infection. In the present study, the bactericidal activity of the sera of rabbit immunized with whole cell extract of Vibrio cholerae O1 was investigated. The protein profile of the serotype exhibited 20 types o...
Among 56 blood isolates of Vibrio species identified by sequencing analysis of 16S rRNA and rpoB genes, the Bruker Biotyper matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) system correctly identified all isolates of Vibrio vulnificus (n = 20), V. parahaemolyticus (n = 2), and V. fluvialis (n = 1) but none of the isolates of serogroup non-O1/O139 (non-...
Vibrio cholerae O1 strains belonging to both biotypes (classical and El Tor) and both serotypes (Ogawa and Inaba) produced neuraminidase which was released rather than cell bound. Classical strains made more neuraminidase than did El Tor strains. About one-third of V. cholerae non-O1 strains and one-fourth of Aeromonas hydrophila strains were neuraminidase positive. Strains of enterotoxigenic E...
OBJECTIVE This study reports re-emergence of Vibrio cholerae O139 in Pakistan in 2000-2001 from a tertiary care hospital in Karachi, Pakistan. METHODS This descriptive study was conducted from 2000-2001. Stool samples were taken from inpatients or those referred to the laboratory from other hospitals, clinics and general practitioners. Samples were processed and Vibrio cholerae isolates were ...
We report a recent case of non-O1, non-O139, nontoxigenic Vibrio cholerae septicemia in a post-liver-transplant immunocompromised patient associated with prior seafood consumption. Non-O1, non-O139 V. cholerae strains have been reported in several cases of extraintestinal infections and seem to be emerging infectious agents especially in patients with immunocompromising conditions.
A total of 1,007 Vibrio infections were reported to the Infectious Disease Epidemiology Department at the Louisiana Office of Public Heath, between 1980 and 2005. The most common were Vibrio vulnificus (257 infections), Vibrio parahemolyticus (249 infections), and Vibrio cholerae non O1 (200 cases). Other species were much less common. Vibrio vulnificus infections, which are associated with con...
We evaluated the use of matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry (MS) for the identification of Vibrio cholerae. MS identified all 42 isolates of V. cholerae O1 and O139 and 7 of 9 non-O1/O139 isolates. MS correctly discriminated between all Aeromonas and V. cholerae isolates. Overall, MS performed as well as or better than biochemical methods.
We reported a case of septicemia by Vibrio cholerae O1, in São Paulo, Brazil. A 70-year-old male patient, living in an urban area, entered the emergency service having sepsis, dying 12 hours later. Blood culture was positive for Vibrio cholerae O1. This is the first case of bacteremia by Vibrio cholerae O1 reported in South America.
