conclusions in the setting of acute left ventricular function depression in hocm, a comprehensive differential diagnosis should be established. treatment should be based on hemodynamic changes. after recovery, the prognosis is related to hocm. case presentation we present a unique case where tks occurred in a middle-aged male patient with hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy (hocm) without a...

Between January 1973 and March 1982, 13 patients have been identified who had in addition to a ventricular septal defect, a discrete narrowing of the left ventricular outflow tract. Two patients had tetralogy of Fallot and one a complete atrioventricular canal defect. Two patients had previously undergone repair of a juxtaductal coarctation and one patient banding of the pulmonary artery. Eleve...

IN THE EARLY 1960s, a distinctive cardiac disease was recognized and named obstructive cardiomyopathy in the United Kingdom,' idiopathic hypertrophic subaortic stenosis (IHSS) in the United States,2 and muscular subaortic stenosis in Canada.3 Each name emphasized left ventricular outflow obstruction, the feature thought to be characteristic of the disease. Subsequently, it was recognized that a...

Accessory mitral valve tissue, a rare cause of left ventricular outflow tract obstruction, can be difficult to diagnose preoperatively and confusing even at surgery. The reported case illustrates how preoperative evaluation can be made using two-dimensional echocardiography combined with Doppler flow analysis. The intraoperative technique for removing the accessory tissue without causing damage...

Of 279 patients with transposition of the great arteries, 14(5%) had narrowing of the aorta, including local coarctation (6), isthmus hypoplasia (6), isthmus atresia (1), and kinking of the aorta (1). There were six deaths in 10 surgically treated patients; in addition four patients died before operation. Two of the four survivors had a subpulmonary malalignment ventricular septal defect with a...

Reflex vascular responses to acute left ventricular outflow obstruction were studied in anesthetized dogs. The studies were done to compare the effects of activation of ventricular baroreceptors on vascular resistance in skeletal muscle (gracilis muscle) and skin (hindpaw); to identify afferent and efferent pathways which mediate the reflex vasodilatation; and to assess the relative contributio...

A Chinese woman was admitted to our hospital because of syncope. Transthoracic echocardiography revealed a hypertrophic basal interventricular septum of 15 mm with a sharp angle protruding into the left ventricular outflow tract. Moreover, an anomalous anterolateral papillary muscle (maximum width of 11 mm) was inserted into the left ventricular outflow tract, with short chordae tendineae conne...

Accessory mitral valve tissue as the single cause for left ventricular outflow tract obstruction is a very rare cardiac malformation in normally connected hearts. We report a case in which this condition was present as single cause for left ventricular outflow tract obstruction. The surgical technique is described and a review of the literature presented.

Right and left heart catheterization, including selective cineangiocardiography, was performed in 20 of the 33 patients examined in a large Negro family. Fifteen had features compatible with the diagnosis of idiopathic hypertrophic subaortic stenosis. Sudden death has not occurred in this family. Many of the patients were young and were totally unaware of the heart disease, although 11 had symp...
