Three newborn infants who had severe congestive heart failure caused by an arteriovenous malformation of the vein of Galen were evaluated by two-dimensional ultrasonography. Examination of the heart from standard echocardiographic planes showed right atrial and right ventricular dilatation. The superior vena cava, ascending aorta and the vessels to the head and neck were enlarged. Contrast twod...
Ann Saudi Med 28(1) January-February 2008 www.saudiannals.net 45 Aneurysm of the vein of Galen is a rare intracran nial vascular abnormality associated with sen vere hemodynamic and central nervous and/or system disturbance leading to intrauterine death and/or early neonatal death.1 It is associated with a wide range of abnormalities like cardiomegaly, ventriculomegaly, intrauterine growth rest...
A neonate with an aneurysm of the vein of Galen was treated by embolisation using Giant-urco coils. Doppler ultrasound examination showed that blood flow in the internal carotid artery decreased while that in the pericallosal artery increased after occlusion, suggesting a 'steal phenomenon' with blood directed preferentially towards the aneurysm.
A case of aneurysm of the vein of Galen is presented to demonstrate the value of computed tomography, not only as a diagnostic procedure, but also in the overall management of the condition.
Vein of Galen aneurysm malformation (VGAM) is a rare congenital vascular anomaly. Although the cause of VGAM remains to be elucidated, the current hypothesis is persistence of the embryonic vascular supply, which leads to progressive enlargement and formation of the aneurysmal component of a typical VGAM. Here, we present a 36-year-old woman at 23 weeks' gestation (gravida 3, para 2) who was ev...
The vein of Galen aneurysmal malformation (VGAM) is an extremely rare arterio-venous malformation. The VGAM clinical manifestations vary depending on the magnitude of vascular compromise and the age at initial presentation. Neonates typically present with severe congestive heart failure. Here we present a case in which a systolic heart murmur was the first manifestation of high output heart fai...
