This paper investigates trends and determinants of the spatial concentration of China’s manufacturing industries using a large firm-level data for the time period of 1998 to 2005. It is found that the overall industrial agglomeration in China has increased steadily in recent years though it is still much lower than those of the well-developed market economies (such as United States, United King...

Consider an urban economy with two types of externalities, negative traffic congestion externalities and positive agglomeration externalities deriving from non-market interaction. Suppose that urban travel can be tolled, that non-market interaction cannot be subsidized, and that non-market interaction is stimulated by a reduction in travel costs. Then the optimal toll is below the congestion ex...

Through exploratory spatial analysis, this paper found strong spatial dependence in levels of urbanization among 287 prefecture-level cities in China, and the high-high and low-low were the dominant spatial agglomeration types among the neighbor cities. The major socio-economic factors also showed obvious spatial dependence, which might contribute to the spatial agglomeration of the urbanizatio...

Transport investments can induce positive productivity benefits via agglomeration economies by increasing the scale and efficiency of spatial economic interactions. In assessing the ‘agglomeration benefits’ of transport investments we need to understand the spatial scale over which these externalities are distributed. This report is concerned with the effect of urban agglomeration on productivi...

This paper provides a survey and guide to the literature relevant to urbanization and economic development. The paper starts with some basic facts and trends about urbanization worldwide. It then reviews the traditional twosector urban-rural model, but focuses on the modern version, Krugman’s coreperiphery model. However, two sector models do not capture the notion of an economy composed of man...

Rapid urbanization is an important characteristic of African development and yet the structural transformation debate focuses on agriculture’s relative merits without also considering the benefits from urban agglomeration. As a result, African governments are often provided conflicting recommendations on the importance of rural agriculture or urban industry. We develop dynamic economy-wide mode...

This paper implements a novel approach to formalizing spatial externalities by employing spatial econometric methods that combine spatial dependence and spatial heterogeneity in the form of spatial regimes. The results confirm earlier findings that academic externalities are not uniform across sectors but also indicate important differences across sectors in terms of agglomeration effects.
