OBJECTIVE The authors measured cardiac index in unstable patients after cardiac surgery with the Pressure Recording Analytic Method (PRAM) and compared it with the reference method of thermodilution (ThD) with the pulmonary artery catheter; using the hypothesis that there were no significant differences between the 2 methods. DESIGN A prospective study. SETTING Cardiac surgery intensive car...

Numerical investigations of a warm-fluid model with an isothermal equation of state for the perpendicular dynamics of an axisymmetric, magnetically confined pure electron plasma predict an exponentially unstable, I= 1, diocotron mode for hollow density profiles. , The unstable mode can be identified with a stable, nonsmooth mode that exists in cold drift models but which is destabilized-by fini...

OBJECTIVE We aimed to observe (i) changes in fasting blood glucose (FBG) in tuberculosis (TB) patients before and during anti-TB treatment, (ii) whether FBG levels were stable or unstable and (iii) baseline characteristics associated with an unstable FBG. METHOD TB patients consecutively attended six clinics or hospitals. FBG measurements were made at months 0, 2 and 6. Data analysis was perf...

Treatment of 4-heptafluoroisopropyl-2-methoxy-3,5,6-trifluropyridine (4 ) with aqueous ammonia in THF gave 2-amino-3,5-difluoro-4-heptafluoroisopropyl- 6-methoxy pyridine (5) in 7 1% yield. Chlorination of this amine with 'ButOCl at -16°C gave an unstable product, namely 2-dichloroarnino-3,5- difluoro-4-heptafluoroisopropyl-6-methoxy pyridine (6). Iodine-catalysed rearrangement of this dic...

We use time-dependent, axisymmetric, hydrodynamic simulations to study the linear stability of the stalled, spherical accretion shock that arises in the post-bounce phase of core-collapse supernovae. We show that this accretion shock is stable to radial modes, with decay rates and oscillation frequencies in close agreement with the linear stability analysis of Houck and Chevalier. For non-spher...

BACKGROUND Oxidative stress is present in cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), and hyperhomocysteinemia, an independent risk factor for these diseases, may play a role by inducing production of oxygen free radicals. METHODS To evaluate the possible role of homocysteine (Hcy) in inducing oxidative stress in coronary artery disease (CAD), plasma Hcy was measured in 68 consecutive cardiovascular pati...

In this note, we show that there exist solutions of the Muskat problem that shift stability regimes: they start unstable, then become stable and finally return to the unstable regime. We also exhibit numerical evidence of solutions with medium-sized L(∞) norm of the derivative of the initial condition that develop a turning singularity.

The existence and stability under pressure of three phases of vanadium are calculated from first principles. The phases are one body-centered cubic (bcc) and two rhombohedral phases (rh(u) and rh(l)), which have greater and lower α values than the primitive bcc rhombohedral cell. The bcc phase is shown in two ways to become unstable at 0.65 Mbar, in agreement with an observed phase transition, ...

Having constructed the equilibrium stellar configurations, we are now poised to ask whether they are stable to small perturbations. This leads us to the subject of relativistic stellar pulsations. One may classify such pulsations by their angular dependence: when we investigate the full subject we will find modes of every spherical harmonic index l ≥ 0. However, for the cold stars of interest t...
