PURPOSE To compare torsional versus combined torsional and conventional ultrasound modes in hard cataract surgery regarding ultrasound energy and time and effect on corneal endothelium. SETTINGS Kasr El Aini hospital, Cairo University, and International Eye Hospital, Cairo, Egypt. METHODOLOGY Ninety-eight eyes of 63 patients were enrolled in this prospective comparative randomized masked cl...

During the development of a new vehicle, the vehicle is usually tested to determine both its static torsional and bending stiffness, and its dynamic torsional and bending modes. This paper discusses a method for determining both static and dynamic properties from the modal analysis test. Such a connection between static stiffness and dynamic modes would be useful for three reasons: (1) the rela...

We present the formalism and numerical results for torsional oscillations of relativistic stars endowed with a strong dipole magnetic field, assumed to be confined to the crust. In our approach, we focus on axisymmetric modes and neglect higher-order couplings induced by the magnetic field. We do a systematic search of parameter space by computing torsional mode frequencies for various values o...

The weakly non-linear interaction of slow magnetoacoustic and torsional Alfvén waves propagating along an unperturbed poloidal magnetic field in a stellar interior is studied in the high plasma β limit. It is shown that slow magnetoacoustic waves parametrically drive torsional modes with the half frequency and wave number. Therefore global slow magnetoacoustic waves which have a radial velocity...

Low-frequency torsional vibration modes of the conjugated polyene chain of the biologically important chromophore retinal are of major relevance when studying its photoisomerization dynamics. We present absorptivity and dispersion spectra of three di€erent retinal isomers in the far-infrared region between 10 and 100 cmÿ1 (0.3±3.0 THz) measured by terahertz time-domain spectroscopy at 298 and 1...

We report the measurement of two new perpendicular (D2O)3 torsional bands by terahertz laser vibration–rotation–tunneling ~VRT! spectroscopy of a planar pulsed supersonic expansion. The first ~28.0 cm) band corresponds to the k562 ←0 transition, and is the lowest frequency vibrational spectrum observed for a water cluster. The second ~81.8 cm) band originates in the first excited torsional stat...

We study low-amplitude crustal oscillations of slowly rotating relativistic stars consisting of a central fluid core and an outer thin solid crust. We estimate the effect of rotation on the torsional toroidal modes and on the interfacial and shear spheroidal modes. The results compared against the Newtonian ones for wide range of neutron star models and equations of state.

We consider torsional oscillations of magnetars. This problem features rich dynamics due to the strong interaction between the normal modes of a magnetar’s crust and a continuum of Magneto-Hydro-Dynamic (MHD) modes in its fluid core. We study the dynamics using a simple model of a magnetar possessing a uniform magnetic field and a thin spherical crust. Firstly, we show that global torsional mod...

We investigate use of nanomechanical torsional resonators for frequency-shift-based infrared (IR) thermal sensing. Nanoscale torsion rods, ~1 μm long and 50-100 nm in diameter, provide both extraordinary thermal isolation and excellent angular displacement and torque sensitivities, of order ~10(-7) rad·Hz(-1/2) and ~10(-22) (N·m) Hz(-1/2), respectively. Furthermore, these nanorods act as linear...

Schemes to include a treatment of torsional anharmonicity in the conformational analysis of biological molecules are introduced. The approaches combine ab initio electronic energies and harmonic frequencies with anharmonic torsional partition functions calculated using the torsional path integral Monte Carlo method on affordable potential energy surfaces. The schemes are applied to the conforma...
