This paper reports on the design and development of an electronic classroom and conference room which was opened in the city of Linz, Austria, in late 1996. This room was developed in a multidisciplinary approach and contains several unique features. After an introduction about the background, rationale for merging the concepts of classroom and conference room, and an overview about the four la...
This paper describes Coralize, a level design tool targeting the creation of underwater environments. The user interface allows a scene designer to customize the generative algorithms of different types of corals and sponges. Moreover, the designer can draw the generated corals onto the scene, following patterns found in real-world reefs.
Architects form an integral link in the design of e.cient buildings. Energy-e.cient design strategies therefore, require architects and engineers to work closely together in optimising the building shell. However, this is not always practical. Architects must therefore, be able to perform a preliminary thermal analysis if energy e.cient design strategies are to succeed. Existing tools do not ca...
The object of this paper is to present some early analysis of interview and focus group data about how existing teacher educators at The Open University (UK) approach, understand, and deploy learning design and the additional support and tools they would find helpful. This represents a component of a broader institutional project that seeks to develop a learning design tool for the support and ...
We present a new tool for molecule design called ADMET SketcherTM. The tool allows chemists to draw any number of molecules inside of a canvas, and immediately obtain predicted values of dozens of key ADMET properties from our best-in-class ADMET PredictorTM software package. The sketcher itself includes a number of novel capabilities, including a feature to modify both the bond angles and tors...

This paper looks at reward within computer games and establishes a visual framework for displaying the reward mechanics used in games in the form of “Three Corners of Reward”. It establishes the link between personal reward, material reward and competitive reward through three drivers: intrinsic, extrinsic and social play. The work shows that this framework has two purposes. One is of a framewo...
Secure System? Challenge Accepted: Finding and Resolving Security Failures Using Security Premortems
Risk-driven approaches are dominant in secure systems design; these aim to elicit and treat vulnerabilities and the threats exploiting them. Such approaches, however, are so focused on driving risks out of system design, they fail to recognise the usefulness of failure as a vehicle for security innovation. To explore the role of failure as a design tool, we present the security premortem: a par...
