This study aims to determine change in optimal locations of dual trailing-edge flaps for various thrust coefficient to solidity (Ct /σ) ratios of helicopter to achieve minimum hub vibration levels, with low penalty in terms of required trailing-edge flap control power. Polynomial response functions are used to approximate hub vibration and flap power objective functions. Single objective and mu...
Introduction T HE propulsion system of a short takeoff and vertical landing aircraft, such as the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, must operate over a wide range of conditions, provide good fuel efficiency at cruise, and deliver high thrust in augmented mode for transonic acceleration and supersonic operation. The propulsion system must be efficient for both high-speed flight and during hover, while ...
The thrust distribution in electron-positron annihilation is a classical precision QCD observable. Using renormalization group (RG) evolution in Laplace space, we perform the resummation of logarithmically enhanced corrections in the dijet limit, T → 1 to next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic (NNLL) accuracy. We independently derive the two-loop soft function for the thrust distribution and extra...
This paper carries out the mathematical modeling, simulation, and control law design for a quadrotor with variable-pitch propellers. The use of variable-pitch propeller for thrust variation instead of RPM regulation facilitates generation of negative thrust, thereby augmenting the rate of change of thrust generation amenable for aggressive maneuvering. Blade element theory along with momentum t...
A quasi one-dimensional analysis of a STOVL aircraft nozzle in hover is performed to estimate the gross thrust coefficient as a function of nozzle pressure and nozzle area ratios. The analysis is supported by subscale, cold flow test results. The nozzle performance was found to be less than desirable in hover due to the overexpansion arising from the geometrical constraints of the existing nozzle.
Propulsion and maneuvering underwater by flapping foil motion, optimized through years of evolution, is ubiquitous in nature, yet marine propulsors inspired by examples of highly maneuverable marine life or aquatic birds are not widely implemented in engineering. Performance data from flapping foils, moving in a rolling and pitching motion, are presented at high Reynolds numbers, Re=Uc/nu, or O...
This paper presents the experimental research into high mechanical efficiency at thrust bearings of low-side scroll compressors for air conditioners with the new refrigerant R407C and Polyolester (POE) lubricant. In order to examine the friction loss at the thrust bearing under a test condition which is close to the actual running condition of compressors, the authors developed a friction test ...
Propulsive morphology and swimming performance were compared for the odontocete cetaceans Delphinapterus leucas, Orcinus orca, Pseudorca crassidens and Tursiops truncatus. Morphological differences were apparent among the whales. The general body contour and low-aspect-ratio caudal flukes of D. leucas indicated that this species was a low-performance swimmer compared with the other species. Pro...
This thesis investigates the hydrodynamic effects of biologically-inspired leading-edge tubercles. Two complementary studies examine the performance of three-dimensional hydrofoils based on the pectoral flippers of the Humpback Whale (novangilae megaptera). The first study uses a static foil, with application to conventional control surfaces– such as rudders or dive planes–found on marine vehic...
