Scapulo-thoracic dissociation is an infrequent injury resulting from high energy trauma which is often associated with severe neurological and vascular injuries which may be unrecognised at the time of presentation. A 24 year-old female presented with bilateral rib fractures, pneumothorax, liver and kidney injuries following a road traffic accident. She also sustained fractures of her right sca...

In the developing spinal cord, regional and combinatorial activities of Hox transcription factors are critical in controlling motor neuron fates along the rostrocaudal axis, exemplified by the precise pattern of limb innervation by more than fifty Hox-dependent motor pools. The mechanisms by which motor neuron diversity is constrained to limb levels are, however, not well understood. We show th...

A case of a progressive ischemia of the right upper extremity in a 57-year-old male caused by primarily undiagnosed compression of a subclavian artery by an accessory cervical rib is presented. Critical limb ischemia persisting for 7 years despite conservative treatment and a thrombectomy of upper extremity arteries and thoracic sympathectomy, led to a loss of three fingers and development of a...

Spinal cord compression due to extramedullary hematopoiesis is a well-described and rare syndrome encountered in several hematological disorders including β-thalassemia. Hereby, a 37-year old pregnant woman with intermediate β -thalassemia with paraparesis and lower limb hypoesthesia was presented. MRI s...

Focal increased lower thoracic spinal cord (18)F FDG uptake is not infrequently observed as a normal physiological finding and may be confused for spinal cord metastases. This study was conducted to evaluate a possible correlation between the lower thoracic (T11-T12) spinal uptake and lower limb movements/ambulatory status of the patients as a surrogate. The primary endpoint was to identify the...

T H E sympathetic outflow to the head and neck and the greater part of that to the upper limbs passes on each side through the relatively small confines of the stellate ganglion and is here subject to interruption by stellate ganglion block. This block will cut off all efferent sympathetic impulses to the head and neck and most, if not all, of those to the upper limb and may be of value for exa...

Studies were performed on anesthetized saline-loaded dogs to delineate the afferent and efferent mechanisms involved in the antinatriuretic response to acute constriction of the thoracic vena cava. The kidneys of the animals were denervated prior to study, and renal perfusion pressure was controlled throughout the experiment. To differentiate between the potential afferent stimuli, increased he...
