We defend pluralism in mathematics, and in particular Errett Bishop's constructive approach to mathematics, on pragmatic grounds, avoiding the philosophical issues which have dissuaded many mathematicians from taking it seriously. We also explain the computational value of interval arithmetic.
We compare experimental melting curves of short heterogeneous DNA oligomers with theoretical curves derived from statistical mechanics. Partition functions are computed with the one-dimensional Peyrard-Bishop (PB) Hamiltonian, already used in the study of the melting of long DNA chains. Working with short chains we take into account, in the computations, not only the breaking of the interstrand...
In Riemannian geometry, a distance function is determined by an inner product on the tangent space. In Riemann–Finsler geometry, this distance function can be determined by a norm. This gives more freedom on the form of the so-called indicatrix or the set of unit vectors. This has some interesting applications, e.g., in medical image analysis, especially in diffusion weighted imaging (DWI). An ...
Results of thermal convection experiments in a rotating uid with a geometry similar to the Earth's core tangent cylinder are presented. We nd four di erent regimes of convection. In order of increasing heat ow, these are: (1) subcritical (no convection), (2) helical plumes (hetons) around the tangent cylinder, (3) hetons throughout the tangent cylinder, and (4) fully three-dimensional convectio...
In this paper a novel algorithm is presented to match the spherical binary images by measuring the maximal superposition degree between them. Experiments show that our method can match spherical binary images in a more accurate way.
For a G-variety X with an open orbit, we define its boundary ∂X as the complement of the open orbit. The action sheaf SX is the subsheaf of the tangent sheaf made of vector fields tangent to ∂X. We prove, for a large family of smooth spherical varieties, the vanishing of the cohomology groups Hi(X,SX) for i > 0, extending results of F. Bien and M. Brion [BB96]. We apply these results to study t...
