The effect of 2-methyl pyridine N-oxide, 4-methyl pyridine N-oxide, pyridine N-oxide, 8-aminoquinoline, dibenzyl sulfoxide on the extraction of manganese(II) by 4-benzoyl-3-methyl-1-phe-' nyl-5-pyrazolone (BMPP) in benzene from an aqueous buffered solution was studied. Synergistic enhancement was observed in all systems. Equilibrtum extraction constants and adduct formation constants were calcu...

We introduce a design strategy to maximize the Near Field (NF) enhancement near plasmonic antennas. We start by identifying and studying the basic electromagnetic effects that contribute to the electric near field enhancement. Next, we show how the concatenation of a convex and a concave surface allows merging all the effects on a single, continuous nanoantenna. As an example of this NF maximiz...

Arginine (Arg) is a commonly used additive to prevent protein aggregation and inactivation in denaturing solutions. This paper presents new findings on the synergistic effect on the prevention of heat-induced aggregation of lysozyme using Arg in combination with polyethylene glycol (PEG). The synergistic enhancement was observed in the presence of Arg with amphiphilic polymers, such as PEG6000,...

We investigated the antitumor activities of 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), 5'-deoxy-5-fluorouridine (5'-DFUR), 1-hexylcarbamoyl-5-fluorouracil (HCFU) and 1-(tetrahydro-2-furanyl)-5-fluorouracil (FT-207) in combination with hyperthermia in vitro. The antitumor effect of 5-FU (10(-4) M) was slightly enhanced by combination with hyperthermia (42 degrees C) for 2h, and the effect was determined to be addit...

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are known to enhance the responsiveness of tumor cells toward chemotherapeutic drugs and radiation. However, the precise mechanism of synergistic enhancement in tumoricidal activity is not clearly known. Herein, we demonstrate that the combination treatment of arsenic trioxide (As2O3) and sulindac resulted in a synergistic augmentation of cytotoxic...

The effect of the adenosine diphosphoribosyltransferase inhibitors, the substituted benzamides, on the cytotoxicity of 6-thioguanine (6TG) was investigated. Nontoxic concentrations of benzamides potentiated the cytotoxicity of 6TG with a dose enhancement factor of 2, producing a 6-fold increase in cell killing at 10% survival. 6TG treatment did not deplete cellular NAD levels, and in the presen...

In situ monitoring of DNA hybridization kinetics is achieved via an attenuated total reflection surface-enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy (ATR-SEIRAS) technique using a sandwich assay structure. The synergistic enhancement effect gives this ATR-SEIRAS-based detection strategy promise to be a convenient and unique platform for bioanalysis.

Cancer immunotherapy attempts to harness the immune system by breaking tolerance and generating a robust anticancer response. We have recently demonstrated a synergistic enhancement in tumor clearance following therapeutic, dual PD-1 and LAG-3 blockade. Here, we discuss the implications of these findings in the context of future combinatorial immunotherapeutic approaches.

Aceclofenac is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that exhibits analgesic, antipyretic and anti-inflammatory activities. It is practically insoluble in water. The effect of hydrotropes such as urea and sodium citrate and blends (urea + sodium citrate) on the solubility of aceclofenac was investigated. The enhancement in the solubility of aceclofenac was more than 5 and 25 folds in 3...
