We report a first-principles study, which demonstrates that a single Ti atom coated on a single-walled nanotube (SWNT) binds up to four hydrogen molecules. The first H2 adsorption is dissociative with no energy barrier while the other three adsorptions are molecular with significantly elongated H-H bonds. At high Ti coverage we show that a SWNT can strongly adsorb up to 8 wt % hydrogen. These r...

Individual single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNT) exhibiting small band gaps on the order of 10 meV are observed for the first time in electron transport measurements. Transport through the valence or conduction band of a small-gap semiconducting SWNT (SGS-SWNT) can be tuned by a nearby gate voltage. Intrinsic electrical properties of the Ohmically contacted SGS-SWNT are elucidated. An SGS-SWNT ...

Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) can be dispersed as individuals in H2O using sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS), typically at 1% (35 mM) concentration. At and above the critical micellar concentration (cmc 8 mM at 25 °C), the degree of ionization of SDS is 0.27.1 Once intertube van der Waals (VdW) attraction is overcome by intense sonication, free SDS adsorbs to SWNT surfaces and creates a net ...

The mechanical failure of hybrid materials made from polymers and single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWNT) is primarily attributed to poor matrix-SWNT connectivity and severe phase segregation. Both problems can be successfully mitigated when the SWNT composite is made following the protocol of layer-by-layer assembly. This deposition technique prevents phase segregation of the polymer/SWNT binary s...

Biomedicine is one area in which single wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) have potential for great impact. However, the toxicological profile of SWNTs remains a significant concern. In our study, we perform quantitative evaluation of the time-evolution of SWNT uptake in mouse macrophages over a period of three cell cycles. Macrophages are white blood cells important for the innate and adaptive immu...

The growth of single wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) mediated by metal nanoparticles is considered within (i) the surface diffusion growth kinetics model coupled with (ii) a thermal model taking into account heat release of carbon adsorption-desorption on nanotube surface and carbon incorporation into the nanotube wall and (iii) carbon nanotube-inert gas collisional heat exchange. Numerical simul...

Ž . The term ‘controlled production’ of single-wall nanotubes SWNT implies the ability to control the selectivity towards SWNT by changing catalyst formulations and operating conditions, combined with a quantitative measurement of the SWNT obtained. In this contribution, a significant advancement towards the controlled production of SWNT is reported. A family of Co–Mo catalysts has been found t...

Polymer brushes with single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNT) as backbones were synthesized by grafting n-butyl methacrylate (nBMA) from the ends and sidewalls of SWNT via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Carboxylic acid groups on SWNT were formed by nitric acid oxidation. The ATRP initiators were covalently attached to the SWNT by esterification of 2-hydroxyethyl 2'-bromopropionate wi...

Polarization dependence of the optical absorption properties of SWNTs are presented and investigated in detail for the energy range 0.5 6 eV. We found that the absorption peaks in the UV region at approximately 4.5 and 5.25 eV exhibit remarkable and different dependencies on the morphology of the SWNT film, or equivalently, on the incident light polarization relative to the SWNT axis. An analyt...
