The air-Q intubating laryngeal airway (ILA) is a new supraglottic airway device which may overcome some limitations inherent to the classic laryngeal mask airway for tracheal intubation. We present a case series of patients with anticipated difficult airway in whom the air-Q ILA was successfully used as a conduit for fiberoptic intubation.
The laryngeal mask airway (LMA) is an ingenious supraglottic airway device that is designed to provide and maintain a seal around the laryngeal inlet for spontaneous ventilation and allow controlled ventilation at modest level of positive pressure [1]. Successful insertion of LMA requires sufficient depth of anaesthesia and depression of airway reflexes to avoid gagging, coughing and laryngeal ...
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Recently, notable progress has been made in the field of anesthesia drugs and airway management. RECENT FINDINGS Anesthesia in prehospital emergencies and in the emergency department is reviewed and guidelines are discussed. SUMMARY Preoxygenation should be performed with high-flow oxygen delivered through a tight-fitting face mask with a reservoir. Ketamine may be the ind...
BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to propose and validate a new clinical score to predict difficult ventilation through a supraglottic airway device. METHODS The score was proposed from our previously reported derivation data, and we prospectively validated the score in 5532 patients from November 2013 to April 2014. Predictive accuracy of the score was compared by the area under the recei...
Before 1990, the choice of an airway device essentially was limited to the facemask or the endotracheal tube. Since then, a number of novel supraglottic airway devices have been developed. The laryngeal mask airway (LMA) was introduced to the United States in 1991 after 3 years of use in the United Kingdom and other countries. Today the LMA has a clearly established role as an airway device in ...
JULY 2005 221 BUMC PROCEEDINGS 2005;18:220–227 OVERVIEW OF THE DIFFICULT AIRWAY Difficult tracheal intubation using direct laryngoscopy may occur ubiquitously across the spectrum of health care (1–8) and is reported to occur with an incidence of approximately 6% in anesthesiology (9); nonetheless, most tracheal intubations can be performed using direct laryngoscopy. Difficult intubation occurs ...
T HE supraglottic airways have gained firm places in anesthetic practice since clinical introduction of the laryngeal mask airway (LMA) Classic (LMA North America, Inc., San Diego, CA) in 1988. Although they are generally being used safely, serious complications occasionally do occur during the use of the airways. To increase safety, we need to know the types, severity, and possible causative f...
OBJECTIVES To assess the clinical efficacy of the self-pressurized air-Q ILA™ (ILA-SP). AIM The purpose of this prospective audit was to evaluate the feasibility of the ILA-SP in clinical practice and generate data for future comparison trials. BACKGROUND The ILA-SP is a new first-generation supraglottic airway for children with a self-adjusting cuff and lack of a pilot balloon. METHODS...
The laryngeal mask airway (LMA) Protector™ is a second-generation perilaryngeal sealer type supraglottic airway device recently introduced into clinical practice. We describe our initial experiences with the use of the LMA Protector™ in three patients undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomies. In all patients, we found the LMA Protector™ to have acceptable placements on the first attempt, adequ...
