One version of the argument for design relies on the assumption that the apparent fine-tuning of the universe for the existence of life requires an explanation. I argue that the assumption is false. Philosophers who argue for the assumption usually appeal to analogies, such as the one in which a person was to draw a particular straw among a very large number of straws in order not to be killed....

Abstract. Hitting times of the global optimum for evolutionary algorithms are usually available for simple unimodal problems or for simplied algorithms. In discrete problems, the number of results that relate the convergence rate of evolution strategies to the geometry of the optimisation landscape is restricted to a few theoretical studies. This article introduces a variant of the canonical (μ...

In these notes, we describe several geometric interpretations of $H^2(X)$ when $X$ is a trisected 4-manifold. The main insight that, by analogy with Hodge theory and sheaf cohomology in algebraic geometry, classes can be usefully interpeted as $(1,1)$-classes. These notes formed the first half an aborted seminar on symplectic trisections at Max Planck Institute for Mathematics during Spring 2020.

Analogy is a powerful boundary-transcending process that exploits a conceptual system's ability to perform controlled generalization in one domain and re-specialization into another. The result of this semantic leap is the transference of meaning from one concept to another from which metaphor derives its name (literally: to carry over). Such generalization and re-specialization can be achieved...

In this work, an analytical study on the bending stiffnesses of corrugated board has been performed. Formulations to calculate the bending stiffnesses D11, D22, D12, and D66 of the equivalent plate representing the corrugated board have been established, and then compared to expressions suggested by other investigators. Several methods for modeling the shape of the corrugated orthotropic medium...

In this paper, a discontinuity in beams whose intensity is adjusted by the spring stiffness factor is modeled using a torsional spring. Adapting two analyses in strong and weak forms for discontinuous beams, the improved governing differential equations and the modified stiffness matrix are derived respectively. In the strong form, two different solution methods have been presented to make an a...

The development of local buckling in the web-post and the compressive regions around the openings of cellular beams is often a critical design consideration. The current buckling assessment of such scenario is still based on simplified models, which are calibrated against detailed finite element models only for specific geometries including layout and range of dimensions, Moreover, the direct u...

In this paper we propose an approach for the automatic extraction of leafless deciduous trees from high resolution, i.e., ca. 4 cm ground resolution, aerial imagery taken in spring. In analogy to approaches for building extraction, we make use of the dark shadow of the tree as well as of the fact that the vertical trunk is imaged as a straight line pointing to the nadir point. Hypotheses for th...

Regularizing the deformation field is an important aspect in nonrigid medical image registration. By covering the template image with a triangular mesh, this paper proposes a new regularization constraint in terms of connections between mesh vertices. The connection relationship is preserved by the spring analogy method. The method is evaluated by registering cerebral magnetic resonance imaging...
