Dr. Wuilker Knoner Campos – Rua João Pio Duarte Silva 1206 88037-001 Florianópolis SC Brasil. Email: wuilker@yahoo.com.br Anterior cervical arachnoid cysts are rare lesions and despite of the large experience of the departments of neurosurgery worldwide, few cases in this localization have been reported. Most intradural arachnoid cysts are located in the thoracic region posterior to the spinal ...
Extradural arachnoid cysts in the spine are rare and are seldom a cause of spinal cord compression. They are thought to arise from congenital defects in the dura mater, and they almost always communicate with the intrathecal subarachnoid space through a small defect in the dura. The mainstay of treatment in patients with neurological symptoms is surgical removal of the cyst together with ligati...
Extradural arachnoid cysts are rare lesions which may produce symptoms by compressing the spinal cord or nerve roots. Surgery is the treatment of choice in such lesions but asymptomatic patients can be managed conservatively. We present three cases of symptomatic extradural arachnoid cysts managed at our institute. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) done in all cases showed an extradural arachnoi...
A 48-year-old male presented with progressive leg weakness. Magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography myelography showed an extradural arachnoid cyst extending from the T-12 to L-2 levels in the thoracolumbar region. The cyst was confirmed at surgery and completely removed. This surgical intervention achieved improvement in the neurological symptoms.
INTRODUCTION Headache is a common presenting complaint and has a wide differential diagnosis. Clinicians need to be alert to clues that may suggest an underlying secondary aetiology. We describe a novel case of headache secondary to intracranial hypotension which was precipitated by the rupture of a spinal arachnoid cyst. CASE REPORT A 51-year-old Indian female presented with sudden onset sev...
The authors describe the case of a 2-year-old boy who experienced progressive spastic paraparesis for several months. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed an extensive extradural arachnoid cyst at the T3-L1 levels and posterior spinal cord herniation at T3-4. Surgical release of the neck of the hernia and total resection of the arachnoid cyst were performed. The patient had good clinical recover...
A spinal extradural arachnoid cyst (SEAC), which is mostly found at the thoracic spine, is a rare disease, accounting for approximately 1% to 3% of spinal tumors. SEAC patients are generally men in their 20’s, 30’s, or 50’s. SEACs are most commonly found in the middle or lower thoracic spine, and less frequently found in the lumbar region, although they can be detected at any lesion of the spin...
A 23-year-old woman presented with a 3-month history of increasing weakness and numbness of bilateral legs and dysuria. MRI demonstrated an extensive spinal dorsal cystic lesion from C7 to L2 (figure, A and B). The patient underwent a T9-11 laminectomy, and a cyst-peritoneal shunt was performed using a catheter. Pathology confirmed a diagnosis of arachnoid cyst (figure, C). The cyst reduced in ...
This chapter reviews the major structural malformations and developmental defects encountered in dogs and cats and their related effects on the central nervous system. Note that congenital deafness and congenital vestibular disorders are discussed with deafness and vestibular disease in the chapter on peripheral nerve disorders (See Myopathies and Neuropathies). Arachnoid Cysts Arachnoid cysts,...
