Thermostable chitinases are useful for industrial and biotechnological applications. This paper reports the stabilization of chitinase from Serratia marcescens B4A through rational mutagenesis. Changing of Ser 390 to Ile in S. marcescens. The stabilization was enhanced through entropic stabilization by reduction of the loop length and also by increasing of the beta chain length. With this repla...

this paper describes optimization method that combines the plackett-burman design, a factorial design and the response surface method, which were used to optimize the medium for the production of l-asparaginase by serratia marcescens sb08. four medium factors, from out of 11 medium factors, were screened by plackett-burman design experiments and subsequent optimization process to find out the o...

Serratia marcescens is commonly isolated from the urine of patients with an indwelling urinary catheter and in the absence of symptoms is often regarded as a contaminant. A case of fatal Serratia marcescens septicaemia with meningitis, brain abscesses, and myocarditis discovered at necropsy is described. The patient was an 83 year old man with an indwelling urinary catheter who suffered from se...

Chitinases have the ability of chitin digestion that constitutes a main compound of the cell wall in many of the phytopathogens such as fungi. In the following investigation, a novel chitinase with antifungal activity was characterized from a native Serratia marcescens B4A. Partially purified enzyme had an apparent molecular mass of 54 kDa. It indicated an optimum activity in pH 5 at 45°C. Enzy...

The genus Serratia a member of the Enterobacteriaceae (see Introduction to the Family Enterobacteriaceae from the second edition.), is comprised of a group of bacteria that are related both phenotypically and by DNA sequence. The type species of the genus is Serratia marcescens. Some species and biotypes of Serratia produce a nondiffusible red pigment, prodigiosin, or 2-methyl-3-amyl-6-methoxyp...

Serratia marcescens has been detected in space habitats. To explore the influence of the space flight environment on this bacterium, we investigated the genome sequence of LCT-SM166, which was isolated after space flight and has a specific carbon source utilization pattern.

Prodigiosins, a family of natural red pigments characterized by a common pyrrolylpyrromethane skeleton, are produced by various bacteria that first characterized from Serratia marcescens. This pigment is a promising drug owing to its reported characteristics of having antifungal, immunosuppressive and anti-proliferative activity. From an industrial point of view to obtain optimal conditions to ...

Cross-infection in a urological unit due to Serratia marcescens is reported. The bacteriology of the organism and its mode of spread are described. It is suggested that Serratia marcescens may be a more virulent organism than is generally believed, especially in situations in which there is an excess of mucus.
