Aims and objectives/purpose/research questions: Can learning additional languages affect what we perceive to be similar events? The current study explores the impact of a second language (L2) third (L3) on how motion is categorized in functional Cantonese–English–Japanese multilinguals. Specifically, it examines extent which L1 speakers Cantonese (equipollent-framed) with an L2-English (satelli...

The encoding of motion events is known to be challenging for second language (L2) users, particularly if the lexicalization patterns their first (L1) diverge from those L2. This paper analyzes oral and written event descriptions produced by advanced L2 users German, an information-dense satellite-framed language. Based on usage error patterns, we discuss six major challenges with respect and, m...
The notion of 2-framed three-manifolds is defined. The category of 2-framed cobordisms is described, and used to define a 2-framed three-dimensional TQFT. Using skeletonization and special features of this category, a small set of data and relations is given that suffice to construct a 2-framed three-dimensional TQFT. These data and relations are expressed in the language of surgery.
Talmy (1991, 2000) classifies languages into verb-framed and satellite-framed types according to whether the Path of a motion event is lexicalized as a satellite of the main verb in the clause or as the verb itself. Thus, in English (and other S-languages like Dutch or Danish) verbs often encode rich information concerning Manner, Cause and/or Movement but need a so-called satellite to convey t...
What are the relations between linguistic encoding and gestural representations of events during online speaking? The few studies that have been conducted on this topic have yielded somewhat incompatible results with regard to whether and how gestural representations of events change with differences in the preferred semantic and syntactic encoding possibilities of languages. Here we provide la...
