The synthesis of the first halogen bonding [3]rotaxane host system containing a bis-iodo triazolium-bis-naphthalene diimide four station axle component is reported. Proton NMR anion binding titration experiments revealed the halogen bonding rotaxane is selective for nitrate over the more basic acetate, hydrogen carbonate and dihydrogen phosphate oxoanions and chloride, and exhibits enhanced rec...
Rotaxane-type receptors, which were composed of anionic cyclophane-based resorcinarene tetramers as the wheel and a 2,6-disubstituted naphthalene derivative having two fluorophore moieties, such as fluorescein and rhodamine residues, as the axle ( and , respectively), were prepared. Rotaxane-type receptors and bound histone, a small basic protein component of eukaryotic chromatins, with binding...
We synthesized symmetrically insulated oligo(para-phenylene) and oligothiophene with a pseudo-linked [3]rotaxane structure by full rotation of glucopyranose units via a flipping (tumbling) mechanism in the π-conjugated guest having two permethylated β-cyclodextrin units at both ends. We also succeeded in the synthesis of an organic-soluble fixed [3]rotaxane by a cross-coupling or complexation r...
We report a diverted route to [1]rotaxane and tris-branched [1]rotaxane that are devoid of any efficient template and which could not be obtained by classical straightforward strategies. The described chemical route relies on the utilization of a "macrocycle transporter", which is able first to bind a macrocycle, second to link temporarily a triazolium-containing molecular axle, and third to de...
We have investigated the dynamics of the hydrogen bonds that connect the components of a [2]rotaxane in solution. In this rotaxane, the amide groups in the benzylic-amide macrocycle and the succinamide thread are connected by four equivalent N-H⋅⋅⋅O=C hydrogen bonds. The fluctuations of these hydrogen bonds are mirrored by the frequency fluctuations of the NH-stretch modes, which are probed by ...
Mechanically interlocked molecules, such as catenanes, rotaxanes, and knots, have applications in information storage, switching devices, and chemical catalysis. Rotaxanes are dumbbell-shaped molecules that are threaded through a large ring, and the relative motion of the two components along each other can respond to external stimuli. Multiple rotaxane units can amplify responsiveness, and rep...
A small molecular reaction network exploits recognition-mediated reactive processes in order to drive the assembly and formation of both a self-replicating linear template (thread) and a [2]rotaxane, in which the linear template is encircled by a diamide macrocycle. Complementary recognition sites, placed at strategic positions on the reactive building blocks, drive these assembly and replicati...
We report on the synthesis as well as the optical, electrochemical and morphological properties of two polyrotaxanes (4a and 4b), which consist of electron-accepting 9,9-dicyanomethylenefluorene 1 as an inclusion complex in persilylated β- or γ-cyclodextrin (TMS-β-CD, TMS-γ-CD) (1a, 1b) and methyltriphenylamine as an electron-donating molecule. They are statistically distributed into the conjug...
A bistable CB6-based [3]rotaxane with two recognition sites has been prepared very efficiently in a high yield synthesis through CB6 catalyzed 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition; this rotaxane behaves as a reversible molecular switch and exhibits conformational changes caused by the movement of rings under base, acid and heat stimuli from one location to the other.
The synthesis of a pyridine-N-oxide containing rotaxane, not requiring an additional ionic template, has been achieved in 32% yield. Successful rotaxane formation is dependent upon the structure of the isophthalamide macrocycle used, an observation which has been rationalised by a combination of NMR spectroscopy, X-ray crystallography and computational modelling.
