Two-proton knockout reactions on neutron-rich nuclei [1] have been studied in inverse kinematics at intermediate energy. Strong evidence that the two-proton removal from a neutron-rich system proceeds as a direct reaction is presented, together with a preliminary theoretical discussion of the partial cross sections based on eikonal reaction theory and the many-body shell model. They show that t...
The three-body description of two-neutron halo nuclei relies on the two-body interactions between the constituents. In order to provide constraints on calculations devoted to 14 Be and 17 B, the neutron unbound states of 13 Be and 16 B have been investigated by one-proton knockout. The experimental techniques and results are discussed here.
The cluster properties of neutron-rich light nuclei are considered. Resonant particle spectroscopy technique and experimental studies of clustering using position-sensitive charge particle detectors is discussed. Some experimental evidence of possible existence of molecular, exotic cluster structures is reviewed.
Stability of nuclei beyond the drip lines in the presence of an enveloping gas of nucleons and electrons, as prevailing in the inner crust of a neutron star, is studied in the temperature-dependent Thomas-Fermi framework. A limiting asymmetry in the isospin space beyond which nuclei cannot exist emerges from the calculations. The ambient conditions like temperature, baryon density and neutrino ...
We propose to search for proton dipole pygmy resonances in nuclei near the proton drip line. Experimental evidence only exists for neutron pygmy resonances, but calculations infer the occurrence of proton pygmy resonances in proton-rich nuclei in the mass region A = 30 – 50. According to recent RQRPA calculations, low-lying E1 transitions, well below the giant dipole resonance, reveal the dynam...
The low-lying states in 106Zr and 108Zr have been investigated by means of β-γ and isomer spectroscopy at the RI beam factory, respectively. A new isomer with a half-life of 620±150 ns has been identified in 108Zr. For the sequence of even-even Zr isotopes, the excitation energies of the first 2+ states reach a minimum at N = 64 and gradually increase as the neutron number increases up to N = 6...
We discuss the present status of the description of the structure of the very neutron rich nuclei, in the framework of modern large scale shell model calculations. Particular attention is paid to the interaction related issues, as well as to the problems of the shell model approach at the neutron drip line. We present detailed results for nuclei around N=20 and, more briefly, we discuss some sa...
Nowadays it has became clear that the magic numbers are not immutable and they can change as a function of the isospin, due to the influence of the residual interaction between valence orbitals [1]. Such a structural change in neutron-rich nuclei is verified in the appearance of the N = 32 subshell closure in nuclei located just above the doublymagic Ca and this can be inferred by different exp...
Recently, it has been reported that as one goes from oxygen to fluorine, just the addition of one more proton, provides extraordinary stability to fluorine which can bind six more neutrons beyond what oxygen can. It is shown here that this surprising stability can be understood if neutron rich nuclei, O and F are treated as bound states of eight and nine-tritons respectively. Also the recently ...
