Cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) and mung bean (Vigna radiata) are important legume crops yet their rhizobia have not been well characterized. In the present study, 62 rhizobial strains isolated from the root nodules of these plants grown in the subtropical region of China were analyzed via a polyphasic approach. The results showed that 90% of the analyzed strains belonged to or were related to Brady...
Host control mechanisms are thought to be critical for selecting against cheater mutants in symbiont populations. Here, we provide the first experimental test of a legume host's ability to constrain the infection and proliferation of a native-occurring rhizobial cheater. Lotus strigosus hosts were experimentally inoculated with pairs of Bradyrhizobium strains that naturally vary in symbiotic be...
The complete genome sequences of two endophytic Streptomyces sp. strains, LUP30 and LUP47B, were analyzed. These strains were isolated from surface-sterilized roots of lucerne plants from South Australia and were found to promote the growth of the rhizobial partner in vitro and significantly increased nodulation and nitrogen fixation in lucerne plants.
Mutualistic interactions can strongly influence species invasions, as the inability to form successful mutualisms in an exotic range could hamper a host's invasion success. This barrier to invasion may be overcome if an invader either forms novel mutualistic associations or finds and associates with familiar mutualists in the exotic range. Here, we ask (1) does the community of rhizobial mutual...
The symbiotic relationship between the soybean plant and rhizobium results in fixation of atmospheric nitrogen (N(2)) in the root nodules, with the result that nitrogenous fertilization of the soybean is unnecessary. The effectiveness of nodule formation and N(2) fixation with rhizobial strains is under genetic control with two general categories identified: (1) promiscuous, which produces func...
Abstract Purpose (1) To assess the biological N fixation (BNF) potential of varieties faba bean ( Vicia L.) cropped with or without compost in an experimental field-scale rotation no recent history legumes, (2) to enumerate soil populations Rhizobium leguminosarum sv. viciae Rlv ), and genetically characterize nodulating strains, (3) compare BNF other sites Britain. Methods was evaluated from 2...
Rhizobia are nitrogen-fixing bacteria that establish a nodule symbiosis with legumes. Nodule formation depends on signals and surface determinants produced by both symbiotic partners. Among them, rhizobial Nops (nodulation outer proteins) play a crucial symbiotic role in many strain-host combinations. Nops are defined as proteins secreted via a rhizobial T3SS (type III secretion system). Functi...
Enforcement mechanisms are thought to be important in maintaining mutualistic cooperation between species. A clear example of an enforcement mechanism is how legumes impose sanctions on rhizobial symbionts that fail to provide sufficient fixed N2. However, with domestication and breeding in high-soil-N environments, humans may have altered these natural legume defences and reduced the agricultu...
