Fractionation of stable carbon isotopes upon degradation of trichlorobenzenes was studied under aerobic and anaerobic conditions. Mineralization of 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene by the aerobic strain Pseudomonas sp. P51 which uses a dioxygenase for the initial enzymatic reaction was not accompanied by a significant isotope fractionation. In contrast, reductive dehalogenation by the anaerobic strain De...

Degradation of tetrachloromethane was examined in the three strictly anaerobic bacteria, Acetobacterium woodii. Desulfobacterium autotrophicum and Methanobacterium thermoauwtrophicum. When incubated under anaerobic conditions in reduced buffer, suspensions of each organism degraded CCI4 by both reductive and substitutive mechanisms. The products formed included less-highly chlorinated methanes ...

Degradation of dyes is an important environmental issue. In order to avoid the carcinogenic risks in anaerobic-aerobic biological process for wastewater containing azo dyes, a hemin based biomimetic oxidative degradation of azo dyes was developed. Acid orange 7 (AO7) was selected as the model for azo dye and the high efficient degradation was achieved in hemin/H2O2 system at pH 11.0. Degradatio...

Microbiological degradation of perchloroethylene (PCE) under anaerobic conditions follows a series of chain reactions, in which, sequentially, trichloroethylene (TCE), cis-dichloroethylene (c-DCE), vinylchloride (VC) and ethene are generated. First-order degradation rate constants, partitioning coecients and mass exchange rates for PCE, TCE, c-DCE and VC were compiled from the literature. The ...

Under secondary metabolic conditions, the lignin-degrading basidiomycete Phanerochaete chrysosporium mineralizes 2,4, 6-trichlorophenol. The pathway for the degradation of 2,4, 6-trichlorophenol has been elucidated by the characterization of fungal metabolites and oxidation products generated by purified lignin peroxidase (LiP) and manganese peroxidase (MnP). The multistep pathway is initiated ...

Perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) is under increased scrutiny asanenvironmentalpollutantduetorecentreportsof itsworldwide distribution, environmental persistence, and bioaccumulation potential. The susceptibility of technical PFOS and PFOS branched isomers to chemical reductive dehalogenation with vitamin B12 (260 μM) as catalyst and Ti(III)-citrate (36 mM) as bulk reductant in anoxic aqueous so...

This letter discusses possible improvements in experimental conditions to enable a purposeful discussion on the effect of substituent groups on the reductive degradation of azo dyes by elemental iron (Fe(0)) in a recent article by Hou and his co-workers. Also recalled is the pH dependence of the iron corrosion mechanism which is usually overlooked in the iron technology literature.
