(Chest 1991; 100:487-93) ung diseases are among the leading causes of death in the United States today. Much work remains in order to reduce morbidity and mortality due to preventable respiratory diseases. Recent documents released by the Surgeon General, the US Public Health Service, and expert medical committees tinderscore the need for today’s physicians to become practitioners of preventive...
The measurement of blood pressure in the physician's office is subject to a number of observer errors and also to the "white-coat effect." Automatic devices that measure blood pressure without a human observer in the room can eliminate many of these problems. We argue for greater use of these devices in the physician's office.
Nearly 20% of patients with newly diagnosed osteosarcoma have detectable metastases at diagnosis; the majority of which occur in the lungs. There are no established recommendations for the timing and modality of metastasectomy. Members of the Connective Tissue Oncology Society (CTOS) were emailed an anonymous 10-min survey assessing their management practices for pulmonary findings at the time ...
Partial anomalous pulmonary venous return (PAPVR) is a rare cause of adult onset pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) that can present with a wide spectrum of severity from early childhood throughout adult life. We present two patients with PAH secondary to PAPVR who reflect this range of disease. The diagnosis and treatment of PAPVR and its role in pulmonary vascular disease is discussed. Car...
The trainee in difficulty is someone who is either marginal or at risk of failing in his or her clinical performance. Dealing effectively with these learners can pose problems even for seasoned medical educators. This article discusses some of the common mistakes made by educators in dealing with the trainee in difficulty and offers suggestions for a systematic approach. Further, the roles of f...
The purpose of our research is the development of a new technology, teleimmersion, which will make possible 3D visual communication between people distributed over the globe. We are putting together a low-end, PC-based, affordable hardware system, and are developing the software for a teleimmersion node (T-node). The software is based on accurate polynocular stereo. We will describe a testbed f...

In traditional clinical medicine, respiratory physicians or radiologists often identify the location of lung nodules by highlighting targets in consecutive CT slices, which is labor-intensive and easy-to-misdiagnose work. To achieve intelligent detection diagnosis nodules, we designed a 3D convolutional neural network, called 3DAGNet, for pulmonary nodule detection. Inspired diagnostic process ...
