During two consecutive years, studies on the sand fly fauna in Poço das Antas and Fazenda Bom Retiro, two Atlantic Rain Forest Reserves from the State of Rio de Janeiro, were performed using Shannon traps, CDC light traps and human bait collections. Eleven species were identified; Lutzomyia longipalpis, L. migonei, L. edwardsi, L. intermedia, L. whitmani, L. fischeri, L. shannoni, L. ayrozai, L...
Abstract Associations of insects that live in nests and burrows small mammals are relatively poorly explored. This work therefore tries to expand the knowledge about Diptera communities (Psychodidae Sphaeroceridae) two mammals, namely Micromys minutus (Pallas, 1771) Muscardinus avellanarius (Linnaeus, 1758). In Eurasian harvest mouse psychodid species one sphaerocerid species, while hazel dormo...
Numerical analyses (correspondence analysis, ascending hierarchical classification, and cladistics) were done with morphological characters of adult phlebotomine sand flies. The resulting classification largely confirms that of classical taxonomy for supra-specific groups from the Old World, though the positions of some groups are adjusted. The taxa Spelaeophlebotomus Theodor 1948, Idiophleboto...
Four species of Tonnoira from the Brazilian Atlantic forest are described and illustrated: Tonnoira brisolaii sp. nov, Tonnoira ferreirai sp. nov., Tonnoira andradei sp. nov. and Tonnoira galatiae sp. nov.
Two new species of Sycorax from the Atlantic Rain Forest of Espírito Santo, Sycorax canaanensis Santos, Bravo & Falqueto sp. nov. and Sycorax tuberculata Santos, Bravo & Falqueto sp. nov. are described and illustrated. Male speci-mens were collected with CDC light traps in the Biological Reserve of Augusto Ruschi, municipality of Santa Teresa, state of Espírito Santo, Brazil. This finding raise...
We describe a multivariate metric comparison of three sandfly species showing strong differences in size, which questions the geographical distribution of one of them. Two species are represented by a single population (L. robusta and L. guilvardae) and one by two populations (L. serrana). All of them belong to the series serrana (Diptera, Psychodidae, Phlebotominae). The morphometric data conf...
Trichomyia pintoi sp. nov. is described and illustrated from male specimens collected from the Atlantic Forest, southeastern Brazil. T. pintoi is grouped with the globally distributed Trichomyia that have 3 palpus segments. It is easily distinguished by the 8 strong spines inserted in the distal third of the gonocoxite. A checklist of described Western Hemisphere Trichomyia species is provided.
Hoover Pugedo light traps were modified for use with green and blue-light-emitting diodes to trap phlebotomine sandflies in northeastern Brazil. A total of 2,267 specimens belonging to eight genera and 15 species were sampled. The predominant species were Nyssomyia whitmani(34.41%) and Micropygomyia echinatopharynx(17.25%).The green LED trap prevailed over the blue and control lights; however, ...
The phlebotomine sand flies Lutzomyia (Psathyromyia) shannoni (Dyar) and Lutzomyia (Helcocyrtomyia) vexator (Coquillett) are reported for the first time from New Jersey. Both species were collected from ultraviolet CO2-baited Centers for Disease Control light traps during a state-wide phlebotomine survey conducted in 2007 and 2008. L. shannoni has previously been reported from New Jersey; howev...
Phlebotomine sand flies are dipteran insects of medical importance because many species are involved in the transmission of pathogens between human and non-human animals. A total of 530 American species of sand flies is presented in an updated checklist, along with their author(s) and year of publication using the classification by Galati (1995, 2003). Distribution by country is also provided.
